Hmm... the 470 is weirdly competitive with the 480, albeit, when OCed. If I were on a budget, I'd much rather get a 470 and OC it and save myself $50 or so.

    EDIT:
Makes me wonder what the actual bottleneck is. The hardware is noticeably worse, yet the performance is almost par.

Makes the 480 stock card look overpriced, acording to other websites the 470 is maintaining full boost whilst the 480 doesn't which is why the 470 gets passed it in certain tests.

Would like to see it compared with the 4gb 480 stock card as I have a feeling despite been £20 cheaper it will be a lot faster than the stock card.

    7950 7970 all over again.

Ability to maintain boost is totally card-dependent. Different coolers, clock speed, BIOSes all affect it.

4GB 480 numbers are in the charts here?

What an interesting development. Seems to basically replace the 480's intent - high powered gaming for cheap.

Interesting that it launches at the same price as the 4GB 480.

Still a nice card though - the upgraded cooler makes it one to pick over a stock 480, IMO.

Interesting. Hardly any difference between the two!

    £188.99 470 Nitro.
    £199 480 Nitro.

Erm.... Not sure what to say really. It's a good card, even better than I was expecting but man the price makes no sense at all. £150 AMD, £150. You can get a second hand 970 for £120-£130 ATM.

AMD should just have ditches the RX 480 with 4GB, so their lineup would have been 470 4GB and 480 8GB.
All these models combined with price gouging makes it confusing atm.

AMD have a bit of a habit of pricing their cards so that they're competing with each other, don't they? This 470 looks really good, but it just seems a bit pointless to have it priced so close to the 480 - how many people will settle for a 470 if a 480 is an extra tenner? Doesn't make sense.

Of course it's still good. Just because you have something last-gen and relatively expensive, that doesn't make it bad for playing games. The 970 was meant to effectively play games at 1080p. I have an R9 290 and I intend to keep it until I either get a 2k+ display, if it dies, or if something is faster than it with at least half the power draw.

    @bawjaws
I was thinking the opposite - why spend an extra 10 on a 480 when you can get a 470 and overclock it for the same performance?

The 470 makes the 480 4GB obsolete. It even trades blows with the 480 in a few games.

I'm still torn between the RX480, GTX1060 and GTX970. The 470 doesn't help matters considering that's 5 cards (2 versions of 480) at the same price point with virtually nothing between them price wise. It seems I'll continue to hold off and see which one drops in price first.

Don't think we will see too many price drops this year in all honesty.

Sure, that's one way to look at it. Alternatively, you could buy the 480 for an extra tenner and overclock that :D Of course, with overclocking YMMV, but an OC'd 480 should be faster than an OC'd 470.

I personally don't like this comparison of "an overclocked product x is faster than a stock product x+1" because it's a false comparison if you can also overclock product x+1.

True, I thought of that. But keep in mind the 480 is already pretty limited. From what I recall, that doesn't have as much overclocking headroom. Considering the 480 does have more physical hardware than the 470, it gets me to think there may be a driver issue. It just doesn't make sense to me how the 470, a GPU with less of everything, can match a 480 just by increasing some clocks. So the way I see it, the 480 is probably going to remain a better option in the long-term once drivers are better optimized.

Yeah I know what you mean; that is something I often consider too. However, it is relevant if you're looking for the best performance-per-<your currency>. If you're looking to play 1080p games and do not intend to go higher than that, an overclocked 470 is a more economically viable choice. And sure, you could always say "if you can't afford an extra $10 you shouldn't buy this product" but considering how minimal the performance difference is, that's basically just $10 you're throwing away for little to no benefit.

Buying two 970's has been the best long term purchase I've ever made for my PC, they're still good enough to run anything I throw at them, therefore meaning I don't have to jump in and pay these absurd prices for a card that can offer more performance, which is really only a Nvidia 1080.

970 SLI should easily last well into next year before anything comes along that they can't cope with.

Q2 or Q3 2017, I'll do one of two things, hope that prices have levelled out and resemble something close to sanity once again or if they haven't, give up on PC gaming and just buy a PS4 Neo and/or an Xbox Scorpio.

I simply refuse to pay £700 for a single GPU, not a question of not being able to afford it, I can, but you have to say enough is enough at some point, and I've reached that point.

Hustler - 2 x 970 in SLI? now there's an interesting idea... I've got the MSI Gaming so will probably need to upgrade my PSU as well, but...
