It was my 18th birthday on sunday and i got lots of money so im going to buy a nice xp2400. The problem is wot do i plonk on top of it? Im looking for something arround the £30 and 30dB ish mark. No alpha's though coz one won't fit my motherboard and their too expensive P.s. I doubt i will be doing much overclocking but i may be doing a little nothing too much.
Didnt you ask this before nd come to final conclusion of the AKASA AK-824cu-BL Socket A Cooler? You can overclock with it but not much temps jump up rapidly.
Oh and Kevo i did ask before but im not that keen on it because its only uses 2 sockets lugs and im not sure if it will fit because my PSU is so close next to the HSF and some capacitors below the socket Kevo anychance of a side on view of that cooler ?
I use a Gigabyte GA7DXR so it looks like yours will fit For reference. And yes Surgical Spirit should get rid of it easly.
The XDream motherboard clip rocks! But im not a fan of the copper slug idea. A copper plate is much better.
I have bin told that the Thermalright slk-800 is the best heatsink out on the market right now. http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/cpu-tri-03.html If you wont overclock then stick with the stock heatsink and fan, get a new heatsink and fan when you decide to overclock. Oh Alpha and Swiftech heatsinks are also very good. But ofcourse they cost a pretty penny same with thermalright.
The Alpha & Swifty heatsinks are better than the Thermalright, but they require mounting holes in the motherboard.
Thermalright slk-800 gets my vote, it fits all three socket lugs and you can fit a wide variety of fans, but it is a bit more than £30. I have one with a noisy 68cfm delta on my XP2200+ unlocked and overclocked to 1920 Mhz with 192 Mhz FSB. The the CPU never gets above 26 celcius according to the ASUS Motherboard monitor utility. I can't say how accurate the ASUS monitor is, but the room is fairly cool so it's not unfeasable. So with a lower overclock and quiter fan there should still plenty of head-room without things getting too hot.
