Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, not Dark Messiah: Might and Magic, surely?

That'll teach me to trust my games writers to know the titles of games.

I've always written it as Dark Messiah: Might and Magic because that's what it says on the box.

Although frankly, I feel like this is a moot point because everyone just calls it "Dark Messiah" anyway.

What did this game in for me in the end was the absolutely abominable pathfinding and AI. I've rarely found a game so desperate to get me to fail by having the intensely-stupid extremely-vulnerable focus of an escort quest run screaming in fear into a battle, get stuck on the world geometry due to shoddy pathfinding and clipping, then die because as soon as I've figured out that they're not coming back to safety and dealing with the enemies that are an immediate danger to them, then figure out how to get unstuck from having their upper torso jammed in a crate before charging in between me and the final remaining enemies, handily managing to catch every single arrow aimed at me in the face at the same time.

I can forgive bugs (depending on severity) but that was beyond a freakin' joke.

After about eight or ten bouts of that, I decided I had better things to do with my HDD space.

So much potential, so horribly ruined by issues that should never have made it past beta-testing.

I mean, Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines had a ton of bugs, but not one every prevented me from finishing the game. It just crashed. A lot.

I suppose DMoM&M at least had the fact it was stable going for it.

    ...

DMoM&M was one of those odd early-Steam games that had the ability to install with or without Steam (like GTR Evolution)... single player would work perfectly without Steam, multiplayer required it.

Oh well, it's changed to 'of' now. But fair enough ;)

Haha, I took so long writing that I missed the updates, so have removed the irrelevant bit. :)

Totally argee with that article, I have very found memories of it.. it was the first game where you could actually take part in the combat, and think about how, and which body part your going to hit, rather than the generic press to hit..

Graphically.. a rich game (source engine I believe) - with some lovely HDR lighting.. Loved battling with the Orks. Must say I'm not dishonored fan, its alright.. but levels seemed too small to express your actions on the world. Live in hope that one-day maybe.. just maybe someone will do a followup.

I enjoyed this game at the time and I thought it was undeservedly criticised. I also remember an easter egg where you climb up a tower and find an item with G Master Thief or something on it. Reference to Garrett from the Thief games.. those were the heady days of PC gaming eh

Great article and good to have all these things highlighted again! I love Dark Messiah and have re-played it almost every year since its release - it never stops being fun, varied and entertaining (as well as challenging!)

I love how much Arkane have played with interaction systems and made them work (remember doing magic in Arx Fatalis by drawing the runes in the air?) and I hope they'll continue to do so in the upcoming Dishonored 2 and Prey...
