Missing the de-facto-standart 850 Evo for comparison here a bit.

Was this with the newer M0CR040 firmware?

Wonder how long it will be before the prices of SATA M.2 drives and NVME ones coalesce?

It's starting to feel a little like the previous SSD v HDD switch haha. Can grab an NVME drive for OS speed and then a cheaper SATA SSD for storage.

The 1Tb drive would make a perfect (relatively) cheap drive for a large Steam library.

Some games like GTA V really do benefit from the faster streaming speeds of SSD's as they build the open world around you in game.

.yes, very tempted to shift over my Steam games to one of these.

Just done exactly this with a 960GB Sandisk SSD I got on Amazon Deals late last year. :thumb:

Strikes me as very odd to have M.2 modules that transfer no faster than SATA. What's the point then?

It's the same speed as the SATA version because it is SATA drive. And the point is mainly for laptops and boards that use/support M.2 SSDs but that don't support the PCI [be it AHCI or NVMe] versions.

Only Haswell-era ones. Anything Skylake and Kaby will have PCIE based M.2.

I got the 525gb SATA drive for £80 near black Friday. Finally got round to installing it (clone wasn't straightforward...) but impressed so far. My first ssd!

But are there many laptops/boards that have M.2 but only at SATA speeds? Because I would think that once you put in M.2 you would make sure it can do more than SATA.

But either way, thanks for giving an explanation.

Enough to warrant them bothering... Mainly in the thin and light/ultrabook segment [and the Macbook Air/some version of the MBP iirc] where space constraints meant there wasn't enough space for a 2.5" SSD...
