Morning all. I've got the full retail version of home premium turning up tomorrow but I want to check with you guys regarding what version I should install. There are 64-bit drivers for all my mobo devices along with the 8800 and the TV card, but I have heard some games won't work in 64-bit vista? (over and above the ones that don't work with vista at all). On the flip side, doesn't 32-bit have the xp problem of not seeing all 4gb of my Ram? If you could poll and give a reason that would be great
Go with 64-bit. 32-bit may be more compatible, but you'll be wasting some of that RAM. In the end, if you really have problems you can always change to 32-bit until more bugs are ironed out. Personally, I would dual boot Vista x64 and Windows XP SP2.
I'll have to watch that when i get home, still none the closer to making up my mind, I want the 64-bit performance but I want everthing to work as well...rock and a hard place!
Aha I installed the 32-bit because that was what was in the box, I have to order the 64-bit disc (free of charge) from microsoft
You'll find that "free of charge" isn't really "free"! It actually costs you £7.88 (£6.71 + £1.17 VAT)... to cover "administration costs" + postage I'd imagine You can request the alternative version (64bit in your case) here
Yeh had to pay £7.88 but its worth it, I do like shiney discs Ramble and with this build I wanted to do as much kosher as possbile.
I'd have a rant at them over that, you paid for 32 and 64 bit editions why should you have to pay for P&P again, it should be free with the purchase.
I think you're wrong Doug? You don't actually pay for both editions? I've got both an OEM Home Premium (for my laptop), and a retail boxed Home Premium, next door. Nowhere on the OEM packaging - or on the retail box... does it suggest both 32bit and 64bit versions are included? You have to decide before you order Vista, which version you want... 32bit or 64bit. It's one or the other - not both I'm not suggesting that's the way it should be of course... but that's the way it is, unfortunately
Yeah pretty sure the retail package of Vista is meant to come with both 32 and 64 bit versions. Sorry to thread hijack but I have a similar situation. Going to be grabbing a copy of OEM ultimate soon. My specs; AMD X2 3800+ 2Gb RAM 7800GTX 256Mb I don't have more than 2 gig of ram so I don't need to install the 64 bit version. But since I'm buying OEM, I'm only gonna get one or the other, not both. I was thinking of getting 64 bit Vista and dual booting with Windows XP. Thoughts? Oh, and what exactly is a "nonperipheral computer hardware component", can i get away with just buying a IDE cable or a DVD-RW, or would I have to buy something more substantial? Oh yeah, the rest of me hardware incase any of you have heard of compatability problems My motherboard is nForce 4 based, Asus A8n-SLI premium or something, can't remember the exact name off hand. Think thats pretty much all of the core components. Since I'm using the on board audio for the time being. EDIT: After reading around the internet at some tweak guides and the like, it looks like there isn't really much advantage to me having 64 bit Vista on my system and quite a few disadvantages, so I think I'll go with 32.
So was I... It doesn't! The retail boxed version only has the one DVD in it - that being whatever version it was you ordered/bought Which is precisely why I had to send/pay for the alternative/64bit version - even though I'd bought a reail boxed version
same here, the dvd turned up yesterday, just a quick question, 32-bit software works fine on a 64-bit os right? (i know drivers are completely different ball game)
