News Intel introduces 9th Gen Intel Core desktop processors

While there is zero doubt that the fastest one of them will be the fastest mainstream CPU in history (history so far, not future history) the price will no doubt be completely silly, what with some shops currently asking £300+ for an i5-8600K and £450+ for an i7-8700K...

 

Well not quite. The ringbus for 8 cores means max 1 extra jump then the ring bus for a 6 core cpu which means some cores will have greater latency I think. If you don't actually need more then 6 cores it has a disadvantage.

 

Except of course it also has higher clocks than the hex cores and the gain from even a minimal clock speed boost is far bigger than the loss from a tiny and situational increase in memory latency.

 

A sly dig at AMD? Maybe they don't consider Ryzen to be a mainstream CPU.

 

9900K 600 quid on scan, 732 euros on centralpoint.nl and 580 pre tax bucks on newegg.

 

I will be interesting to see how the two extra cores of the non-hyperthreading i7 stack up againt the two fewer cores but four extra threads of the 8700k.

 

And people were telling me I was stupid for saying these things will never get released for <500 Euros a pop. I actually set 600 Euros as the minimum in my estimations... maybe after the pre-order hype phase.

 

Are those actual RRPs, or "supply is short, so we'll just mark them up to whatever we feel like" retailer pricing?

 

If the £600 for the 9900k is retailer gouge... they're all in on it, everywhere I saw was charging the same for the 9900.

 

I nearly spat out the tea I wasn't drinking when I saw Scan's newsletter listing the 9900k for £600...

Mind you the 6c/6t 9600 @ £350 is also taking the ****

 

Should be $488, which at todays exchange rate is £372, then add on 20% VAT and you get £446.40.
So just over £150 gouging to get to £600.

But... it is basically happening with all Intel CPUs at the moment,

Not very impressive in terms of overclocking.

 

That may be a mistype, as he showed me a cinebench r15 run at 5.3 on water I think at 1.4v.

Under ln2 clocking similarly to CL so I wouldn't be surprised if the same applied when using ambient.

 

I love it, another half baked panicked release by Intel. Is the price night because they are struggling with production? You'd think they'd have it licked as it's the same lithography as the previous stuff. Yields shouldn't be bad?

Great to see a rotated-socket layout on a non-server board, but looks like consumer motherboard manufacturers still haven't learnt the lesson of putting actual heatsinks on their boards rather than just slapping on some cosmetic chunks of plastic.
