    ^^^

I beleive it will also support MPEG 4 playback and will have a power down option once downloads are fiinished. So you can leave it on over night downloading then it will turn off once complete if it has not already overheated and set fire to your house and woken you up with the ringing of your fire alam and the fire engines outside :)

Because the technology you get with the PS3 is worth 500 dollars. A Xbox360 with a redundant HDMI port and a bigger but as of yet not really defined or proven useful hard drive isn't. PS3 is going to have its own library of great games, and a lot of games are going to be multi-platform, so you won't be missing out on a lot.

What you get with the Elite is basically a 360 with a spray paint job I could do myself for $2.50, an HDMI port less than 10% of homes can actually use and a bigger and still overpriced hard drive that isn't good for anything but downloading movies and TV episodes. (something I could easily do on my computer for free :worried: )

Don't get me wrong here. It's not like I'm trying to bash on the 360. I have one, I enjoy it, I agree it has a lot of great games, and a lot of games coming that I myself and looking for. I just can't justify the price for the elite.

Yeah, one might say "hey, you're saying the HDMI isn't useful, but the PS3 has one, are you saying that's not useful?"

Well, yes and no. The HDMI port on the PS3 follows the HDMI 1.3 specification. I'm not an AV expert so I'm not sure if this is 100% accurate but this means the PS3 can send fully uncompressed Dolby TrueHD audio over HDMI in a completely lossless format. This is something that the 360 Elite is not capable of.

    So who cares?

The people who are gonna care are the 10% of the people capable of using all of this newfangled AV tech. These are the people that don't mind spending thousands of dollars for a TV to run their PS3 at 1080p. I don't think it's too far fetched to guess that these people are also going to want the highest possible audio quality they can get, and the HDMI port on the PS3 offers that, whereas the Elite does not.

All this I got from this thread. Look at the posts by Amirm. He's a Microsoft VP of integrated devices blah blah something or other.

I don't see the point in relaunching the elite personally, HDMI in my view is not a stable technology. When the elite was being developed there was only 1.2 out, and now there's 1.3, what about the people that got HDMI when it first came out? They will be stuffed for the extra "features"

    There's HDMI Types A, B and C (like USB A, B and Mini B).

    There's HDMI 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.2a, 1.3 and 1.3a.

How do you know which you have? I doubt you can upgrade your existing HDMI port.

HDMI 1.3s special "audio" features mean problems, you can use the True HD encoding and decode it on your AV, but this may mean some audio lag dependent on your decoder. It also means that the audio streams cannot be mixed prior to transmission, so if you're using some form of interactive media it will be like going back to the old game days with only one sound effect playable at a time on a soundcard.

Remember that? When the aim of the game was to get a sound card that supported the most concurrent channels?

HDCP hasn't even been finalised in the integration with HDMI yet! I mean that's just ridiculous.

I'm getting a new case for my 360, a mirror black XCM one with a nice blue X on the top. Then I'll buy the 120GB hard drive.

Oh wait, here in the UK we're getting f***ed over again. There's not even been an official confirmation it'll be released here.

So I'll just source a 120GB drive and replace my current one.

You see, there's the downfall in your argument: anticipation and expectancy.

The 360 already has a great library, just like the PS2.

    Give it 18 months.

    QFT.

As it stands the PS3 has very little I want and therefore little reason to get one over a 360 (be it premium or elite).

Also I cannot use the PS3 on my monitor like I can with my 360 which means it would be stuck on a SDTV until I finally upgrade to a HDTV which (unfortunately) I feel will be a long way off.

In 18 months time things may be different and the PS3 might be worth having, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I hate it when people try and compare the PS3 to how the 360 was on release. That's all very well, but you need to compare the PS3 to what the 360 is now, as that is what the PS3 is competing against not what it was a year or more ago.

I definitly need the bigger drive, I tend to download the demos and trailers and hate deleting anything unless I really dislike it. (I could have killed my brother when he deleted a load of stuff (4Gb worth) a couple of weeks ago especially as I hadn't had a chance to watch some of them and I've now got to re-download them again.

    You're using a 360 on a SDTV?

    HERESY!

Seriously, for the love of god upgrade! You'll never go back. My parents 28" CRT makes me go blind now.

Also in contrast I never download anything, especially if I have to pay for it. There's not enough stuff on Live to begin with.

I don't mind some of the stuff on Live, like Worms. I'm only buying it though because I get 2100 points for £15.29.

I'm using my 20" Dell widescreen monitor via the VGA cable - and it looks awesome, however not having a component or HDMI socket on it would mean if I got a PS3 I'd have to use the PS3 on my normal SD TV instead.

I'm so glad I purchased a white XBOX 360 Premium instead of waiting for the Elite - it looks really cheap and nasty in that picture that my eyes started to bleed.

yes, but as that's how my PC is connected I don't fancy having to switch cables everytime I want to play.

What, in your opinion, are the great games for the 360? >.>

    I have a 360, but meh, I can't really see me playing anything but CoD3, Dead Rising, GoW and Lost Planet x.X;

Either way it goes, I'm probably gonna get myself a Ps3 when more of the games I like come, such as Ratchet and Clank, MGS4, RE5 and DMC4 (yes, DMC4 and RE5 is on the 360, but I can't picture myself using the 360's controller for those games).

RE5 will be on 360 and the controller is still far superior imo, I couldn't play any RE games on the PS2. Silent Hill 5 will be PS3 though.

N3 was good for a flutter, worth getting 2nd hand to pass the time. Lego Star Wars 2? There's a huge catalogue. Viva Pinata?

Ah, well I watched Viva Pinata on Xbox Live and played Lego Star Wars demo >.> It was pretty decent.

I don't think I'm really into consoles till the better games come out imo, I'm waiting for the "next gen" MMOs for my PC >.>; I need something other then WoW :D

sorry about the triple post my computer went a little wonky. I have to say i enjoy my elite, and that i got it for free (old 360 combo deal from CostCo died, i took it back and got 480 plus tax back in cash, went to game crazy and picked up the eliteand with store credit a play charge controller combo). It is quiter durring movies and i USE the hdmi1.2a connection that the box provides, on my mitsubishi dlp. Would lossless audio be nice, i guess but my tv dosent suport 1.3 so it doesn't matter to me. The black color isnt why i picked up the elite, I actually filled up my old 360's drive a number of time with content the 109 gigs of free space on the elite is already being put to use.

I dont care if the elite is lacking th 65nm chip, i dont really care about the color,i do care that it has hdmi, included the hdmi cable, and has more storage space. if you dont like the elite, dont get one, if you like your ps3 fine i dont care it was not a system i liked, i have enjoyed the 360 alot more.

    my 2 cents
