Dear god, this just ruined my reading of the article...

I do fancy me a 3D printer though.

While injection molding is faster and allows for lower cost of production of parts, the Original Prusa i3 printers are a fork of the RepRap project. The point is to try and have as much 3D printable as possible.

From reprap.org "RepRap takes the form of a free desktop 3D printer capable of printing plastic objects. Since many parts of RepRap are made from plastic and RepRap prints those parts, RepRap self-replicates by making a kit of itself - a kit that anyone can assemble given time and materials. It also means that - if you've got a RepRap - you can print lots of useful stuff, and you can print another RepRap for a friend..."

I have a mk3, and of the 4 printers I've dealt with it is the easiest to work with. Had it for a year and it is a champ. Issues I usually have end up being with a model not being well done and I don't check it fully, or filament issues because I tend to buy the cheaper stuff. No major issues. PLA has been easy to work with, but PETG has been even easier, especially when the textured sheet was made available after production issues.

    Nice score, Alex! :D
I'll probably set up a foundry or get a welder before I get a printer. I think I'm wired different. I know too many people that can print stuff for me now.

Stick the welder (assuming wire-feed) in place of an FDM print head, and you have a metal 3D printer!

I really like my Prusa. But I got to remember not to print direct from the PC if I am not going to be using the computer for the entire duration of the print. Three times I have left the computer and three flabbergasting times Windows decided to make my experience better by updating and rebooting. Results of the latest interrupted when I moved the print head up to clear the board.

Ow. Yeah, never plug a mill or printer into the internet. The current Windows staff think users only shart around playing candycrushsaga.
My personal favorite dumb windows10 moment? I played a game to push the new rig's temps. It crashed. It was a message from 10 saying they were not going to interrupt me during "gaming mode."

@edzieba - They are gonna have a fun time getting that to bridge, though. The arc will want to bend to the nearest metal.

To be fair, 2017 was 14 Doge years ago.

I built my printer three years ago, but lack of space means I haven't switched it on in almost 18 months. :sigh:

Mother of God...that assembly job made me break out in a sweat, there is no way I'd trust myself to put something like together..just building a PC gives me palpitations, giving me that to build would probably put me in the ground.

Building one from a kind is a great educational experience - you come away from it with a far greater understanding of how they work and, more importantly, what can contribute to given problems.

    I'd definitely recommend it.

    I've been laying the groundwork.

Everytime she says "oh no this is broken" I say "I could print you one"...

    I'll wear her down :)
