    Was SMR not rubbish for writing to in terms of speed? I seem to recall something about SMR drives and people attempting to avoid them :oldconfused:

    Tl;dr:
    Yes SMR has performance drawbacks, but you are kind of stuffed without it if you want to build high capacity drives.

    Only if you're over writing a track that has existing data on an adjacent track. I've had an 8TB Seagate archive drive in my server for ~4.5 years now and write speeds are just now starting to tail off to ~75MB/s with less than 1 TB of space left, but that's typical for most 5400rpm spinning rust though afaik.

    Is that ware we have raid5/6 or Z1/Z2/Z3 and backup's for?

    Never trusted a single disk to keep all my data on, and my most important data +/-1.5TB is even on 5 locations, PC/server/backup-server/offline-backup server/offsite server.
