Might be more useful if with a lot of games they stopped them having to be entirely downloaded again just to install a new update.

Does that actually happen often? I can't say I've noticed. Most updates seem to be a small proportion of the total download size, in my experience.

Can't say that's ever happened to me.

Mind you I don't have the biggest library.

It depends on the game. PUBG is 9GB every time.

Presumably the entire download for a new install is still more than that, though?

I have Steam but, when you have as many games as I have, bandwidth used by updating is not something to worry about.

Why would that help during this period?

If you want to reinstall, you can just drag & drop the folder back and have Steam 'verify local files', rather than deleting the game and having to re-download it.

But you can do that just as easily on an SSD as an HDD...

Sure, but a 2TB SSD is ~£200, whereas that will easily get you 12TB of spinning rust. One will be crammed with your steam library a lot faster than the other.

Dunno, I only ever keep current games on my SSD. No HDD storage.

The rest, well I keep save games and uninstall the games. I figure if I do play them again there'd be a shed load of updates to install anyway.

I think that's what the article - which, disclaimer, I haven't actually read - is trying to suggest people avoid doing: instead of doing your usual trick of uninstalling the game when you're bored and reinstalling it when you want to pick it back up again, either leave it in place if you've room spare or shuffle it off your main drive onto a secondary drive if you need to free space. That way, if you decide next week you actually want to play it again you're not hammering the server to redownload it.

    Never happens to me.

If i'm done with a game i'm done with it, either for a long time or forever.

If i'm not sure i'll leave it a while before uninstalling and of course there are one or two i'll leave installed.

But then that may not be the norm.

Most people don't have a massive steam library, so they can pretty easily just leave everything installed.

Actually, i'm kind of talking crap when I think about it.

I don't think I actively have uninstalled that many games, I think Elite was the last one but I lost all interest in that.

If anything I redownload games because I've bought larger SSDs, upgraded my pc and then had a fresh Windows install and redownloaded again.

No that's crap too, increasing SSD size I just moved the folder to the new one then reinitialised them in the library.

You know what, don't listen to me. I'm rambling crap.

I've done the "copy folder, verify local files" method dozens of times with Steam - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The worst one was Final Fantasy XV, where it "verified" the folder (something like 120GB with the HD textures) then proceeded to redownload the whole lot anyway. More recently Just Cause 4 pulled the same stunt. I've had other games (most, actually) work without issue though.
