Now that was surprising. Or not.

A great product IF you have a use case. Like so many HEDT chips, this one is a beast in any workload, but almost unbeatable when it comes to highly scaling workloads (i.e. rendering).

Good for AMD that they're actually respecting the £/$ exchange rate when it comes to pricing.

..a stark contrast to the other tech firms such as Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte and all the others, that like to rip off their UK customers with a totally unjustifiable £1=$1 (or worse) pricing structure.

He also said water is wet.

It should come as no surprise to nobody that 64c/128t CPUs are niche, even for HEDT. There are hardly any use cases outside of professional customer circles that even get close to using that many threads. Whether or not this CPU blurs the line between HEDT/pro-sumer and professional even more? Sure, maybe. If you don't need that much memory bandwidth or total memory and can live with potentially higher TDP, this CPU might save you quite a bit of cash.

Niche is an understatement - there are few workloads that will see a benefit of this over 32c/64t. Still mind-blowing.

    That power consumption!

We have a 3970x workstation at work and its absolute monster. But for not much more than the price of the 3990x we got a whole workstation (including a RTX2060). Even the 3970x exceeds the thread limit on some of the niche software we use. But there is something mental about seeing 64 threads running near full tilt and also seeing a single threaded application running full tilt use 'only' 3% of your CPU!

You could add a heavy excel recalc workbook to the tests as this does seem to use 64 threads on the 3970x (but appreciate that's not the reason people are buying these).

On a similar vein, have you considered adding some CFD or Finite element workloads to these workstation benchmarks? OpenFoam is freely available on the CFD side and I'm sure you could create a 'bit tech' benchmark without too much difficulty.

That is because the apps he uses don't support the core loads. So for now it would be a waste of money.

If you are Pixar however? go for it.

These are designed for a specific purpose, and it isn't us. That said they are an engineering marvel. Sheer silicon pron. So fair play to AMD.

It only supports 4 memory channels so the effective memory bandwidth available to each core is tiny. The moment you go beyond the cache all those cores will be just sitting around waiting for memory. That makes it's usage pretty limited. It's got to be something not suitable for a gpu (which has many more cores and much high memory bandwidth) and needs only a few mb of memory.

In most areas of the US, sales tax is much lower than the UK's VAT. The highest points in the US look to be about 12%. So it depends.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X CPU is present in my system. To date I am very satisfied with the performance.
