Isn't this really Deep learning and not AI? It seems the two are becoming conflated or the meaning of AI is changing.

Deep Learning is a type of AI (mostly a rebranding of Artificial Neural Nets run at massive scale), just like agent-systems, Support Vector Machines, etc are all AI techniques.
In research, AI is an umbrella term for a whole range of symbolic and non-symbolic approaches.
In popular culture, AI is a sliding window of commonality: yesterday's fancy AI-powered magical future-tech is today's commonplace oh-that's-not-AI-that's-just-an-instagram-filter.
