I think this may be on the cards for my new build come November time... 1TB though, it'll be more than enough given access to SSD sata storage and NAS.
It would be nice to see a break down of the speed differences by SKU, Im lazy and cant be bothered to google it half the time :hehe:

But then I have to go to anandtech rather than see it here but I appreciate your point. It’s easy to find, I’m just giving bit-tech a gentle nudge

Yeah, sod that. I'd rather wait for the new Evo, if I was in the market - it will have practically the same performance in all but write endurance, which isn't worth the horrendous premium.

That looks like it'll be on the compatibility list for the PS5. And it looks like it'll be the only drive on said list at the moment.

Suddenly the Xbox proprietary upgrade slot and its pricing seem a bit better in the short to medium term. Over time I feel an industry standard connector will be the cheaper option for storage upgrades, but at least in H1/2021 the Xbox upgrades seem well positioned.

Isn't that infographic incorrect? The 980 Pro is TLC memory, not MLC like the previous Pro drives.

It is TLC but you know... marketing got to marketing so they call it 3 bit MLC.

Well technically anything that isn't SLC is MLC. It's just with 3 and 4-bits/cell getting their own initialisms in TLC and QLC most took MLC to mean 2-bits/cell.

The new consoles will likely be around for 6-7 years, SSD's that work will be cheap quickly, especially if my suspicion that the 'only certified drives' line from Sony is bluster turns out to be true.

Ditto for the Series X, I really hope third party SSD enclosures come out sooner rather than later, no way am I paying Microsoft's silly price for a 1TB official drive.

It's Sony, they'll likely limit customer options artificially and arbitrarily. And the Xbox connector probably won't allow anything else to connect. Somehow shareholders have to kept happy.

Welcome to the great locked-down world of entertainment systems and consumer electronics in general.
