Philips, who invented the CD format, have got a working prototype 3cm disc that holds 1GB of data. It's all done with bloo lasers, and cheese will be happy to explain exactly how if you ask ;)

Read a little bit more nad see a pretty cool pic ::here::

heh it's not as amazing as you'd think... sound likes they're just exploiting the laser wavelngth and nothing more. Moving from IR to red from cd to dvd roughly decreased the dot gap by a factor of 1.5 - so squaring this (as the dvd surface is a two dimenstional layer) and a dvd should be twice as big as a cd through wavelength considerations alone. When they first made CD's they were super over cautious about the error correction needed (an 8 bit byte is converted to a 14-bit word, then times'd by 3 to include error correction and position indication etc.) - so just cutting all this out and trusting the accuracy of the reader get you half way to a dvd, then they make the disc multi-layered to give you the dvd size we all know and love.

    a 30Gb disc just sounds like dvd size x (red wavelength/blue)^2 x 2 for a 4 layer disc :)

    3cm Disk approx 28cm²
    6.4cm "MiniDisc" approx 128cm²

    128/28 = 4.5

or in otherwords a Minidisc sized disk could hold 4.5 gig's of data.

I think thats about the biggest i'd carry around with me.

I could lug my entire MP3 archive around with me on 2 disks, that would be truly l33t.

    that's amasing! totally awesome...
you know that they already got watches out with digital cameras built in. criminals are gonna have a hard time getting away with crime when everyone's always got a camera on em(especially one you don't notice, doesn't make noise, or even make a flash.

trouble is... who the heck needs all this?

the mp3 watch is a good idea though.

Djgizmo, I think you'll realise that what's important about technology is not wether or not anyone actually 'NEEDS' it, it's that millions WANT it!!

There are bound to be some really practical applications, but I think developers make these things 'coz they can' as it were. Making things like these a) makes people like me drool, and b) Gets companies like Philips a hell of a lot of good publicity!

Damn straight MrDT. I want one just cuz they are tiny and sweet looking.

mp3 watch? I dunno. I want headphones with a built in mp3 player that are no bigger than my current sony street style ones. That would rock my face off and I would be in heaven :):cooldude:

That is cool, but to me if a Normal DVD size is 12 cm and holds over 4gigs... and this cd is 3cm and holds 1gig, all they did is take a DVD and 'cut' off 3/4 of the disc, leaving you with a 3cm Disc that holds 1gig. :p

Now the drive is a different story, that thing is tiny and sweet.

    lol

Hard to know if you were being serious or not... just in case; area goes as diameter square, not to mention any hole in the middle - the readable area of a 3cm disc will be a lot less than a quarter of the area of a DVD :(

cheesedude is right, now we just have to increase the diameter of the discs to 12cm and we have something better than a DVD... no?
