I have read some where it is possible to install four IDE devices on a single channel.
    Mother Board (Device 1)
    HardDisk (Device 2)
    HardDisk (Device 3)
    Optical Drive (Device 4)
but the fourth device is read only. Is this true/doable?

    Short answer: NO

Long answer: The IDE standard only allows for two settings per channel - "master" & "slave" ("cable select" just makes this automatic). You can run a single drive in either mode but the second drive has to have the other setting. There is no setting for a third device. (The motherboard does not count as a device.)
