Hi all, I've had the 4870X2 since it came out, and its done a fine job, but I'm not getting as high framerates as I want in BF3 (currently in the thirties on Medium Settings with 2xAA 4xAF). I'm a little out of the loop, been a while since I last bought anything, so have a few questions: *Do people reckon this down to the GC or CPU/RAM? Those components are even older than the GC. *How does the 4870X2 fare in the current GC world? It doesn't appear on most performance comparisons because of it's age. *What do people think I should be looking for if I want to upgrade and get playable framerates on Ultra settings with 4xAA? Thanks in advance
BF3 is heavily multi-threaded (look in task manager whilst it's running!), so the more CPU horsepower you can throw at it the better. Of course GPU is also extremely important, but I'd say that your Q6600 is definitely going to hold back a faster new card. Your card is roughly equivalent to a 5870, 6950, 560Ti or 470GTX, and you are relying very heavily on AMD drivers keeping support for an out of date card. So really you are looking at 7970 or GTX580 3Gb to see a tangible benefit. Might just want to hold off and see what Kepler brings to the table. Also, if you do go for a platform upgrade (Sandy/Ivy Bridge without question), no harm in sticking 8Gb in there with memory prices as they are
A GTX 560Ti will run BF3 with High settings @ 1080p and get >30fps, so his card really isn't equivalent to that. Also, I doubt the Q6600 would bottleneck the GPU, as you would need a REALLY old CPU for that to happen. I would say a GPU upgrade would be a good choice, but I would suggest waiting for the new cards form nVidia to come out, when hopefully the prices of the 5xx series will drop
My 2GB 560TI @ stock plays a mixture of high/ultra settings with FPS consistently above 35 FPS normally with my average between 38-50 depending on game type etc.
lol my 4870 (single card) gets about 30 on medium at 2560x1440 bro i think a lot of it is cpu. going from a phenom 965 to a 2600k (@4.6) boosted my fps by about 10 lol
Just did a quick run of 64 player Caspian with Medium, 2xAA, 4xAF, Motion blur off and HBAO. FPS? Average 25 Sooo, new GC it seems. Interesting, on paper the 4870X2 should equal or sometimes defeat the 560Ti. j4mi3, you are getting 30fps on medium with a single 4870?
well. 25-30 cpu is important i think in some games more than others i take it your resolution is 1080p you would probably want a gtx580 to get respectable fps on ultra, with 4aa and by respectable. around the 35 mark
Are AMD still even updating drivers with older gen cards in mind? It seems from this thread that the 4870 and 4870X2 perform similarly in BF3, implying that CF support is lacking or not working.
Everyones suspicions are confirmed. 5min run around Caspain with Medium, 2xAA, 4xAF, no blur, HBAO, and Everest Ultimate recording in the background. Utilisation results: CPU1: 84% CPU2: 66% CPU3: 66% CPU4: 66% RAM: 92% GPU1: 99% GPU2: 0% Conclusion: Every member of ATI management needs to be beaten to near death, then covered with petrol and set alight. Anyone got any ideas of how to get the second GPU working?
Where would I check this? Both GPUs worked in Crysis 2 as far as I remember. I had installed Catalyst Software Suite 12.1, but I've just noticed theres also a Catalyst Applications Profile 12.1 CAP1 on the website. Is this included in CSS or seperate? Also, Battlefield has always launched minimised for me, and I have to maximise it. Also, the tiles for the menu never match up with the cursor. Could it be that the driver thinks it isn't running full screen so is leaving GPU2 in sleep mode? How to stop?
Fixed! It's fixed! Catalyst A.I. was off but needs to be on apologies to ATI, I'll take the petrol back to the store tell the thugs to get back into the car. So, an end to this thread because the money can instead go on a new cpu mobo and ram when Ivy Bridge comes out Thanks all.
