I am trying to buy a new GPU. :wallbash:SO far I have decided on either the 4890 or the 275.

Cos of my limited funds, should I make my purchase now or should I wait for fermi which is at least 4 months away?

Saying that, performance wise, the 5xxx series cards from ati how do they compare to either of the aforementioned cards? Would it be better to just "steal":worried: some more cash to get the 5850 or would the 5770 do?

    Thanks

Thank you for an instant reply:thumb:

Haven't really thought about resolution. Currently only use 1440x900.:sigh:

But I plan to upgrade my screen in the following year so I think I will be gaming at 1680x1050:cooldude: if I can't get 1920x1200:hip:.

Not really interested in which version of DX it is...

Out of the 4890 or 275, the general recommendation is there's not much between the 2, so whichever one's cheaper.

    4890 for £130
    GTX275 for £190

Those are the cheapest versons of the cards on eBuyer. Scan's only available GTX275 is £190, too. Depends whether the occasional frame is worth £60 to you.

HD4890, no contest, if only because it's dirt cheap.

Or you can try your luck at HD5770 Overclocking.

the 5770 will be a little slower than the 4890 but will be dx11 and better power consumption so my choice would be the 5770

    Cost = 4890

Noise (especially under load) = 275

DX 11? = nowt to see til this time next year (see Dirt review)

Solution? ...Get a 4890 with an after market cooler.

i hit this wall when i was building my rig back in october. to be honest, had the 5850 not been released i would have gone for the GTX 275 as it is more powerful in crysis and so on. it does take more power but in the long run i wouldn't bother with either i would go for the 5850 although they are in large demand and are very hard to get hold of thats my suggestion as they are more powerful than either and is DX11. its a future proof card so it would be £200 well spent.

    Appreciate the suggestions.

@javaman - not going CF or SLI. my old card was an 8800gt. Though now it has gone caput so I need a new card anyway.

So far it looks like the 4890 now has only my bias toward Nvidia to contend with.

@Elton - I am not big fan of overclocking though I like to see it being done.

At the moment I am only playing terran conflict but I will be buying a few more PC games in the future

@fingerbob69 - does that mean the 275 is that much quieter?

do you fold? if so then go for the gtx275, else pick the HD4890 as the cost/performance ratio is insane.

not really a big folding fan. but there are other gpgpu applications I could tryout like badabong? or physx. I know physx is low on the ground right now but that situations is likely to change soon. I think!!

On an aside, the cheapest I could find the 4890 was from dabs.com dabs.comfor £135. Any body seen it cheaper?

I wouldn't wait for newer cards or go with the 5xxx series cards. First gen cards seem to not be all that great right off the bat. Let other people work the bugs out of the new stuff then get one if you want.

Right now I don't think that there are many games coming the the new future that will really push anything bigger than a 4890 anyways. I could be wrong but with that resolution there isn't much reason to go bigger.

Yes.... check out most references to the 4890 on this site. With the stock cooler it is loud. But, get one with an after market cooler, it becomes quiet in a civilised type of way, still cheaper than a stock 275 and thus a much better "bang for buck" purchase (there is an article on here proving such).

As others have said, so far we have only seen one side of the next gen battle in terms gpu's... so who knows what Nvidia will produce or at what price or, more to the point when. More to the point, must have games in DX11 are going to be few and far between for the next 10 months. That is the nature of the 'new'. First rule of new technology... let someone else buy the betamax for £800 (to see if it's taken up) and let some one else by the Blu Ray (for £500) to then see the price fall ...and then join in.

What are you playing? Maybe a 4780 would do? esp if you're only gaming at 1440X900...

It saves you £30 you can use to buy a better monitor/graphics card later :)

There will always be different opinions as I mean mine has changed a few times but I have had the 275 and the 4890 and have found it smoother with COD4 and my photo-shopping. But as i said you will always get different opinions.

I used to be so biased with ATI but the I had the old GTX8800ultra and loved that card. At the moment with the budget you are looking at I would with the 4890 at the moment.

I am upgrading mine but have been saving for a big change so i will be going over to the 5890 and can't wait to try that out

Yeah to be honest, I'd wait for revision of the current HD5xxx series once they get stuff ironed out.

Or even go as far as waiting until the HD6xxx comes out.
