I recently got a brand spanking new 40gb 4th gen ipod, the first thing that i did upon recieving it was to leave it to charge over night from the mains adaptor. Then the next day i preceeded to install the software off the cd that came with it onto my computer it got the part where it said your ipod needs to be configured so i plugged my ipod in and it wouldnt find it using the firewiere cable so i tried it on all of my firewire ports nothing happened still, so i then used my usb cable that came with it again same result so i skipped that step of the install. i d/led the latest firmware update off the apple support site and it wouldnt find my ipod when plugged into firewire at all so i tried the usb cable after much playing and prodding it finally found my ipod and updated it but then disaster struck it kept coming up with a picture of a folder with an exclamation mark on the screen. Now according to the apple website that means low battery life (cant be fully charged) wrong software version or incompatible hard drive format but ive just updated to the latest firmware and the apple updater thing formatted the hard drive for me so thats gotta be right. it also suggests that the ipod is locked up so ive restarted it numerous times. i have exhausted all the off the options on the apple website i have tried to do updates/restores ive restarted it tried it with and without the dock both firewire and usb cables. if i plug it into usb it comes up saying do not disconnect and shows up as a hard drive (when i put it into disc mode) in my computer but when i plug it into firewire nothing happens except sometimes it decides to charge. my bro's ipod worked fine on my computer when i set that up for him ages ago before he had firewire and that worked fine with my firewire ports first time. i dont want to send it back to dabs or apple support as i want to use it, has anyone got any ideas any help much appreciated.
Well, is it particularly usable at the moment? Send it back, get one that works. Give Apple support a ring/email first, and explain the symptoms - they'll let you know whether it's definitely faulty or not.
just plugged it into another computer via usb 1.1 and it restored so i got the menu back i replugged it back into my computer via usb i left it about 20secs and it finally appeared in itunes i unplugged it from the cable and plugged it in via the dock windows said it was finding new hardware again and then it came up with a problem this is well annoyying
If you do have to send it back to anyone, send it back to Apple instead of Dabs. Apple's returns service is fantastic
Make sure you donwloaded the correct firmware. They've got about 3 different versions up there for earlier gen iPods.
