I'm looking for a pair of 4*40 LCD displays to create an assistive device for a woman with cerebral palsy. In a nutshell she will point ot a board in front of her with a membrane keypad ( Clicktouch looks good) and the words she selects will appear in front of her and displayed to person sitting opposite to her. She's completely non-verbal and this I figure would really ease her Starbucks sessions. Any suggestions on the best LCD and where to get them and the price? I'd consider other form factors as well but something like 2x20 seems small. A graphics based LCD would allow me to make the font bigger. Would be helpful.
they have some pretty cheap lcds here http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=365&type=store more specifically.. 40x4 http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=365&item=LCD-85&type=store 256x128 http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=365&item=LCD-101&type=store#
E-bay would be your best bet to find cheap LCD's. Those from All-Electronics are non-backlighted, and the graphical one requires negative voltage.
Some of the ones I've been looking at have a 9 pin serial port and basically you can just throw them ASCII control codes. That would be the simplest for me. I'm guessing that means though that these types are higher end ones with some sophisticated internal electronics? Would that be right?
You just missed out on this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=3841785099&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT. It retails for $199. LCD's with serial connection aren't that more sophisticated but probably easier to control it your own way.
