    Hi,

i would like to get some sort of 5.1 system for the gaming build in my sig. I dont have a discrete soundcard but would consider getting one if it will make a huge difference over the onboard.
I am flirting with the idea of getting a decent 5.1 headset but i have read that they are all gimmicks though the info i have is slightly dated. Is this still the case?

I assume that it would be better to splash out for a 5.1 speaker system but i dont want to spend a huge amount if possible (say £200-£250 for a soundcard and speaker set).

So lets say you have a budget of £250ish, what would you go for?

    Hi blinkieleblind.

Having had a 5.1 headset for a number of years (medusa 5.1s), I would probably avoid buying another 5.1 set. Your money is better spent on soundcard capable of virtual surround (works really well!) and some stereo headphones. Better sound in general plus none of the setup issues. 5.1 speakers on the other hand can offer a better experience if you have the room for it and set it up correctly (i.e. not lined up infront of you, but spaced around the room). The goto set for most gamers are the logitech z-5500s, but I'm not very clued up on alternatives.

meh, those speakers are a bit pricey for me.

My pc is currently connected to an external marantz amp with 2 (old but decent) pioneer speakers. For music i am happy with this setup but i would like to add immersion to games by getting a 5.1 set. I have read that the onboard audio on my mobo is actually pretty decent so would only go for a high end sound card if i had to.

As for speakers was thinking of these

they have had a couple of decent reviews and although not digital i can live with them being analogue. I am no audiophile after all.....
as for stereo headphones i have some seinheiser hd215s that im happy with.

have seen some z-5500s on ebay which may be an option but will see when i get funds through monday.
