ok I'm interested in getting myself a 5" lcd/tft for my next project... and I was wondering about a few things....

since most of the screens I've found on ebay were for car... how you plug it in a pc? via serial, vga, other interface?

where do I can buy one outside of ebay?

is there any software to manage 5" lcd/tft screens? if not... How do I?

Is there one 5" screen in particular that I should look for?

    thx for the help

PS: didn't really knew where to put the topic since it touches modding, software and hardware... sorry if in bad forum

Most 5" TFT's run off 12V, so just your yellow and black on a molex

Most 5" TFT's run on composite video (Yellow RCA jack from VCR etc)

Most 5" TFT's on PC's are used on S-video port of Video cards (With adapter to Composite video)

www.tundraelectronics.com has some of these screens in the states for a reasonable price (Mine were only $79US each) but there are other places as well

I don't know of any software to run just the 5"tft since it runs as a monitor on the s-video out of your vid card.

I have mine wired with a source select (So I can use external hardware, i.e. VCR, PS2, XBoX, etc or the S-video from my radeon)

remember car voltages are 13.2 nominal, but considered 12V, and the TFT's will run from 10V to 16V reliably, tho at higher voltages they get some pink glow at the bottom.

    You can check mine here:

    you got the M5M screen?

hum.... running it from my primary vga card s-video jack means that it would display the same thing as my primary monitor... meaning that I would have to get a pci vga card with s-video to run the display as a 3rd screen... and from there I would have to write an application in cpp to display temps, cpu usage, etc, etc...

to put it simple... I better get a graphical vfd then...

I run mine as a secondary monitor, from my 8500... and it works nice, but I wouldn't give up my Noritake 800 VFD for anything, That thing is SCHWEEEET...

I run stats from mbm on my 5" and just place them on the secondary monitor, and it works nice... but there's no replacement for the VFD IMO

Some GForce cards support dual monitor through NView. This means you have 2 monitors showing different things, basically having an extention to your desktop. You can make a system monitor that takes up a whole screen, and open that in your second desktop. Or just have a screen saver going.
