Whats the rest of your system specs? That should help us to decide how much difference losing dual channel will make. However, chances are that you'll get a slightly smoother PC with 768MB.

ok, my motherboard sucks, so I can't do dual channel no matter what
I have an athlon XP 2500+ with a radeon 9600 pro
I have 2 stick of kingston value stuff, totalling 512mb. 200mhz.
or, I can add another 256 mb stick of 166 mhz dealyo. which should I do?
and I was thinking about getting 2 gb, but I don't have the cash.

actually, interesting enough, superpi to the 2 millionth number runs like 7 seconds slower. and HL2 episode 1 runs at the same speed, but the load times are MUCH better. I think I'll stick with 768.

The way programs hog memory now, I would say stick with 768 also, and if you cant dual channel, I think that pretty much decided for you

768, DDR2 really slows down the rig, maybe by 40%.
