I have a visiontek radeon hd 4870 512mb and i am looking to get another card sometime soon. The prices of the 1gb versions are going down extremely. I was wondering if there be any problem with combining the 512mb card i have now with a 1gb version in Xfire? Thanks, Ace
Unbalanced CrossFire has been supported in ATI cards for a few years now. You'll be fine. It's something SLI has lacked, and is still lacking.
well my question was could u do it with one card having more ram. you can sli with different company cards but i dont know about sli`ing with cards with different amounts of ram. Ace
You can't SLI cards with different amounts of memory, but I guess that is possible with CF. Someone posted a nice chart in another topic, I'll try finding it. edit: Oh yess, found it: Crossfire compatibility chart even more edit: A bit offtopic, but for my future reference, do you guys think it's possible to Crossfire a 4870X2 2GB and a 4870 512MB?
Something like this should be stickied :O I was under the impression (before) that CFing cards with different amounts of vRAM meant that they defaulted to the least amount of vRAM either of the cards have. As this is not the case, I might treat myself to a 4870 1GB to go with my Sapphire 512MB model
Hmm, that's interesting. If I bought a 1GB to go with my 512MB, would having the 1GB in the top slot increase performance, or does it not work like that? Still good to know, thanks
In theory it should be better performance than having the 512 in your top slot, as the PC uses the primary card's memory (and GPU), and the secondary card's GPU only in Crossfire... I think that's how it works at least...
Wow I just found the most amazing value 4870 1GB. You get a beefy sapphire custom cooler for just £179. http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/1637125/art/sapphire-technology/radeon-hd-4870-1-gb-gddr5.html
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102801 oo look an even cheaper one for us in the U.S. o and i think a 4870 and a 4870 X2 can be crossfired by the looks of mm vr's chart o and i agree i think i might pic up a 4870 1gb to go with my 512mb
YES, you can indeed xfire a 4870x2 with a regular 4870... I've thought about it, but the price for the X2 is a touch too high still (that and you'd need around an 800 watt PSU to be on the safe side of things).
Nah, you only need a high wattage PSU for the connector's sake. My friend is running a system with a quad and a 4870X2 on a HX620, and it's as easy as a piece of cheesecake. Dual 4870X2's would start getting a bit too much for it but it might handle that aswell. ----- I'm thinking of getting his 4870X2 after he's bought a new card. He's a HC gamer and wants the extreme graphics card always. I'm just wondering if it's worth to CF it with my current 4870 512MB.
It should work fine, as the memory only stores textures and other stuff, for quick access. What's more important is high bandwidth (e.g. 128 or 256bit), and fast memory, to ensure the card isn't starved of data to process, as it waits for the HD to spin up and transfer the information to the card. And I agree with mm vr, 800w is a lot But yeah, as long as its still the same card, albeit configured slightly differently, there should be no problems, and a solid bump in performance, with the better card as the main one.
I was referring to running a 4870X2 and a 4870 in CF... You really do need an 800 watter to stay on the 'safe' side of things. The 620 may have enough power for it, but running a PSU at near 100% isn't the way to make the PSU last.
Corsair gives a 5 year warranty, and it'd be a kind of suicide for them if their PSU's didn't last for at least that, even at near full load.
well i have the corsair 750tx so id say 750 watts is enough power even for dual 4870 X2 mmm cheesecake
