Bah, I still use 256 Mb and don't plan on upgrading until next summer when I build my college PC, which will have to last for 4+ years, hopefully DDR3 (2+ Gb) and a socket 939 (maybe dual 939 ) But who knows for video card, they come out too often.
That would be kinda hard since there will be no dual 939 and ddr3 is reserved for graphics cards for now.
a gig is alot nicer then 512, its almost a requirement if your running AOL, like me , i would be bothered but its better then dial-up anyday. also makes any game i can think of run much sweeter, esecially x2 if anybody here palys it, dam its a life drainer
I have 1GB and I'm lovin' it. RAM is one of those things, which you can't have enough of. It's really useful for demanding applications like Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, Premiere, etc. Also really good for games.
Havent yet noticed a massive difference between 1gb and 512 yet tbh, moved from 1gb sammy/corsair to 512 (DC) OCZ and although in ut2004 and other games 500mb is regularly used havent noticed much of a difference. Games/maps etc... loaded a little faster but thats it. Would go back to a gb though might add a 512mb stick to me current 512 sometime....
I used to have 256MB of PC2100 in my main gaming machine, but I replaced it with 512MB of PC3200 when the prices were down to about $110CAD. I got UT2004 recently, and it seems to require a full 1GB of Ram to run smoothly.
Exactly... as someone else on here pointed out, the same is true for FarCry. That game really needs 1Gb. It does a lot of arsing about with 512.
I had 1GB, then I lost 512MB for some unknown reason, just went out blank. Now I have 512MB and I could cry cause this rig is freakin slooooowwwww in CAD and other stuff ... 1GB is defenetly the new standard and if I'd have the money I'd get even more ! Cheers Fred
Well im currently running with only 512mb. I've bought a bunch of games recently, and have had to turn down the settings, and im runing a Gainward GeForce FX5600 256mb (the best i could get when i was building my comp) and a 2gig CPU! So i really think the standard is becoming a gig, if not MORE! Over the summer im gonna work my arse off for 3 things: 1) To get another stick of 512mb PC2700 (min). I wanna play Far Cry!!! 2) Want to get a new case, new IDE cables, LED Fans, and other bits and bobs 3) Pay off the debt i have (currently running at £145 Went a bit mad with the ol' Debit Card)
I remember back in the day, 4 months ago actually, I had 128MB of SDRAM and windows XP took about 2 minutes to shut down; after I added a 256MB stick of SDRAM windows now takes less than 8 seconds to shut down. I should really upgrade to DDR.
Yeah the new standard is 1Gig I want to get 1Gig so much currently on 512 and I dont notice any slowdowns or anything but I really think that is the bottleneck on my computer the only problem is ram is so expensive at the moment 1Gig of good speedy ram runs for about the same as a highend video card.
I did have 1GB of DDR 333 but some how one stick has died causing major problems, so now im useing 512MB DDR 333 and I can see the differance, its not dead slow but deffo slower than habing 1GB
got my 1GB back I can see a masive differce in game waiting for new maps to load, 1GB should be standard on all gaming machines now, if not stop playing pong
I dont think that your video card is helping you out in the gaming department much either You could really use something like a 5900 XT, as BigZ reccomends for new mid-range high performance video cards
