Well, after christmas I'm planning for an upgrade. And I realy want one of the 580MHz 512MB 7800GTXs. Either the BFG or the XFX. The problem is, I cannot find one in stock, anywhere. Any ideas if they are going to be available sometime in January, and if they have disappeared of the face of the Earth, what would be a suitable replacement?

from what I've heard, These cards were never in good stock, and never will be. Maybe go with an x1800?

I would wait a while. I jumped in and bought the BFG 7800 GT OC 256mb Card a few weeks ago but regret it now as i have to buy a Laptop for work (an order from the boss). I have to sell the BFG for the ruddy Laptop!! I wish i had waited till after Chrimbo now.

Not sure what a suitable replacement would be mate. Depends on a lot of factors. BFG make superb Cards with the lifetime Warranty so that would be the company to go for. I always stick with Nvidia. Just do your research mate. I did but other factors have entered my life now so i can't go the route i wanted to.

Yeah, Your best bet would either be to wait a untill gtxs are back or go for a x1800 512. Also I've seen quite afew of them around eBay (going for about £380). :thumb:

That depends if you wish to use more than one card inm the future or not.. if so, then the 7800 is a clear winner, as crossfire sucks.

Wait for the benchies to emerge... With some driver work and time it looks to be as fast as SLI... Only issue is the annoying Dongle. Dual 16* boards _should_ allow Crossfire without it though (afaik) which could be a winner.
That and crossfire seems to work on the NF4 mobo's ;)

Anyway the GTX512 is in very short supply, might be worth grabbing a X1800XT or 256GTX and overclock a tad....

The current limitation of CrossFire is the whole Master/Slave malarky, IMHO. If you've got an X1800XL, you've got to spend nearly twice as much as you're likely to pay for an X1800XL to get an X1800 CrossFire card. That will also end up being crippled because of the XL too.

However, on the talk of the topic - the 7800 GTX 512's are vapourware IMO, and that's why we've not bothered reviewing any board partner cards. You're best looking at an X1800XT or one of the faster GTX 256's.

i'd either wait for the 512GTX or wait for the 8 series because right now crossfire just dosen't seem worth it

how much worse would it be to get a 490MHz 7800GTX?

would i feel a severe performance hit. how high can they clock on stock cooling?

it wouldn't be a severe performance hit and you should be able to OC one nicely even on stock cooling
are you getting a new CPU because with any of these cards that would be a limiting factor?

Yes... an opteron 175 most likely.

One thing is for certain. I'm not waiting beyond february. This PC is just awful and I want to be playing the games I have asked for for xmas.

well then it just comes down to how much money you have to spend and if you want to wait for a 7800GTX 512 to become availible, if you have the money I say wait a little and get the 7800GTX or wait till february and go for the 8 series

btw nice CPU hope you do some nice overclocking with it

I have about £1500 to spend.

Does anyone have any clue when they will be available?

All I can say is that having the 256MB is amazing, the games are amazing etc. The extra 256MB will give you extra better textures in some games, I'm not sure whether you would actually notice it because I don't have 512MB. You could get the 256MB version and sell that later if you are willing to (get the XFX one and I'll buy it off you in February :D). £1500 will give you a top end computer.

if you don't already have a 7800GTX 256Mb, then its probably worthwhile to just get one...and skip the trouble of tracking down a 512. I shelled out $750US for the BFG OC version within 2 minutes of seeing it in stock. Lucky me, I actually got one.

    Vaporware it is not.
    Short supply? Yes.
    Price hiking? Yes.
    Fast? Yes.
9k on my Intel rig (3.73EE stock) I could probably sell for a $300US profit, but I am keeping it.

If you currently have a 6XX series card, a single 256GTX will be beautiful.
