OK. So, I currently am using 1GB of PC3200 Ultra in my system, at 3-3-3-8 timings. I also have 512MB of PC3200 Kingston HyperX which overclocks tons better, and has timings of 2-2-2-6. Would the 512MB of the faster HyperX perform better than my gig of Ultra? I hope so, as if it does I have some good things planned with that other gig, mainly getting a few old PC's working, but that's not important. Basically, is 512MB of fast RAM going to perform better than 1 gig of slower RAM?
no, ull want to use the 1 gig. and are your sure the timings are suppost to be 3-3-3-8 seems a little odd for ultra
Positive, checked it out meself. It's not any of the good, low-latency Ultra, it's cheap-o "bought it on the cheap from Tiger Direct" Ultra. So a slow gig is better than a fast 512?
Well ****. I was gonna split this gig up and use 512 each for two other systems. *sighs* Well, I'm back on the RAM hunt
well i dont know keep in mind that you can overclock fast ram more by dropping the latencies and thus allowing for a higher clock. Slow ram is already slow so you dont have much head room try doing some benchmarks before you decide i myself have 4 sticks of hyperx 256mb modules and couldnt be happier
Could I make up for any of this size loss in paging file size or anything else? I would really like to be able to use this gig of slower RAM in a few other systems, so I'm scrambling for options. Are there any? Yes, my RAM is by far my overclocking limit right now, so with the overall gain, the ends may justify the means here. I'll mess with it tomorrow, do some benchmarking, see what's best. Thanks!
Well, with the Ultra I was getting 5911 in 3dmark03. With the HyperX and the highly-increased OCing abilities, I broke 6000 . 6164 . So, in this case 512MB fast > 1GB slow
eh, of course 512mb of fast ram is faster in benchmarks than 1gig of slow ram personally i'd go with the 1gig, the speed difference isnt that much and is probably not noticeable in real world apps/games but you'll notice the extra available ram much more
I can't believe not a single person has asked what he uses his pc for. If you do things that require a gig of ram - eg. more modern games in high detail then a gig of slow is definitely better. 512mb of fast ram is obviously better if you rarely use apps/play games that need it. Try putting the 512 in for a while and see if there is any slowdown. If there is you have your answer.
While you are correct about the benchmark vs. real life point, the 512 of fast still won out. I play hl2, doom3, all of the battlefields, and in all these games the 512 won out. The 1 gig was struggling to keep at at 200mhz (DDR400), and it lagged quite a bit. With the 512, I am utilizing quite a bit more RAM than I used to ( wow..what a surprise ), but loadspeeds and such are a ton faster, simply because the RAM is loaded faster... I also do frequent Photoshop work, and while I opened it up and monitored (I always have Samurize running with a RAM% monitor on my second display), I didn't notice any problems. I didn't do any real editing, so I guess I'll see for sure about that one in a few days . Overall, this seems to be the best solution. Especially because now I'm typing on a computer that was a pile of parts this morning . Needed this for my apartment in-town, as I was computerless .
id go for the 1gig, eventually your going to need it. Most new systems come with 1gig now and 512 is the minimnum id have. ive got 512 in my other pc that was buiot years ago. my latest has 2gig becaues i want it to run all future apps for the forseable future... just my 2 pence worth...
It really isn't, especially in his situation where he has other uses for his 1gig. One gig is rarely needed unless you do a lot of gaming or intensive video/image editing etc. 512mb is fine for "general" usage and will be ok in most games too. I really can't understand how people find a gig a LOT faster, I can't tell the difference. Do you all have 100s of services running, and 50 windows open at once or something?
1gb is definatley better than 512, i can certainly tell the diffrence! if i were you, id stick with the 1gb
Well I have noticed a decent amount of speed decrease since the switch, even though it looked faster at first. I needed the gig for the other computers, so I went ahead and splurged, and bought another identical HyperX stick, so I'll have my gig back again . Ah well, got a really good price on it -- $102 with free 2nd day air shipping, and considering the other prices I was looking at were upward of $140, $102's pretty good .
