I don't want millions of Windows Updates though, with the amount of **** that they probably pack their downloads with.

I just spoke to a guy who knows people who work at NTL. Apparently, the problem developed in Glasgow at about 4:30pm yesteday, lol... the exact time I got it basically.

By 7pm it had reached South England.

that worm only started spreading the other day the exploit has been known for a week and a bit

if the stupid script kiddies knew what they were doing they would have made the worm no crash the rpc service after the exploit has been used that way no body would know about it

um, apperently i had a different one that also planted MSblast into my system, because i've been having this damned problem for about 2 weeks now. cant say for sure if msblast was there the whole time, but it was when i looked today, and the problem's been the same for the whole 2 weeks. i put myself back behind the firewall now tho.

I have posted a fix in that post.

I have also contacted GOO to try and get it on the news section because its really quite serious.. I noticed it badly at work today as I work on a tech support desk. we have had to make LOADS of CDs for customers which have bought our PC's because every un-patched system is vunerable. Both win2k and XP have this flaw and I believe NT aswell.. this thing is going to go global and apparently has a suspected secondary payload which is meant to use any infected machine to DOS microsoft's site on the 16th. nasty one this :D

There aren't "millions", there are about 30 critical updates for XP (with SP1). If you aren't patched with all of these and running a virus scanner with a firewall, as I said already you deserve to get hacked. You don't even need to download them all in one go. Pick out the smaller ones and download those first. Then when you have a slow time online, download a few more... it will only take one good evening to sort all the downloads out.

Why do you think Microsoft includes an Automatic Update tool? I don't use it myself as I regularly check WU manually, but it's still a good feature if you can't be arsed to check yourself.

The patch fixing this exploit was released weeks ago, you've had weeks to get patched. Do you keep your virus scanner up to date? Good... keep Windows updated too. There is NO excuse not to.

isn't this quite the thing :grr: I just saw on tech TV that on the 16th of each month all the comps DDOS windows update. kind of ironic.

Glad I had a copy of zone alarm sitting on my HD, kinda funny, in a matter of 14 seconds, zonealarm cought msblast trying to connect to 64.24.66.1 through 64.24.66.180

Yes, this patch is a critical update and would've been automatically downloaded. If you haven't installed all the updates you have waiting on your PC - then do it now and just sit back and wait. 10 minutes of your time is worth being spent on protecting your PC from exploits as simple as this.

Maybe your virus definitions aren't as updated as M_D_K's so he wouldn't notice if Norton automatically removed the virus without warning while he was grabbing a beer/coffee/taking a leak...
