    hi guys

started sleeving my cables at last and have come across an issue i have 2 x 6+2 pin cables coming from the psu. My card takes 2 x 6pins can i remove the extra 2pins which are connected but not part of the 6 pin block?

if yes can i just cut the spare wire close to the 6 pin wire so it sleeves nice and neat or is there a chance of electrical issues doing this? i dont have the tools to repin the actual wire hence the cutting idea.

any advice is greatfully recieved as always

Yeah, just remember that if you cut, then the warranty is void, and that you need to ensure the core is securely insulated.

If you don't want to void the warranty, then maybe you can un-clip it and just tuck it out of the way?

    insulating

    thanks for the advice

would a simple piece of electrical tape be enough to insulate the cut wire?

Well if you're sleeving your psu cables then the warranty is already gone so snipping off a few pins isn't a deal breaker. What I would ask is what psu are you sleeving? If it's a 100% modular unit or the pcie cables are modular then there's no need to cut them off, simply disconnect them from the connector and keep them in case you ever install a graphics card that requires an 8 pin connector. If the cables are hardwired to the psu then cutting them off is your only option if you want to be rid of them. Make the cut as out of the way as possible ie closer to the psu end than the device end, you can shrink some heat shrink around the cut to isolate it.

Using an Antec 750 True Power Blue it has some modular cable features but these cables are hardwired into the PSU.

Some of the cable i dont even need

additional 2 pins in PCI-E plug is just grounding (black wires) so if You want You can easily cut'em away. but Your next GFX card could have 8-pin PCI-E connector and it can be an issue.

I'd sleeve up a 6 pin only extension cable.
Keep your warranty and the option to go 8 pin at a later date if you wish.

Vevvo, you might also want to consider simply depinning the terminals. Apply some heat shrink over them to isolate, then neatly fold the wires back to the psu and tuck them away somewhere. That way if you ever need to use an 8 pin connector you can sleeve and reinstall them.

    atx 12v pin

    Mozez and all

Thanks for the great advice and options for me to consider, on your thought of tucking away the +2 pin cable i also have a 12v ATX that this mobo doesnt need can i fold that up inside the PSU housing out of the way?

Are there any risks involved with a folded cable inside the PSU?

    Thanks

This is what I would do. You never know when you might need those 2 extra pins. Its a lot easier to unfold them than to remake the lead.

I wasn't actually suggesting you fold the wire into the psu but that's a perfectly reasonable option if you're happy opening up the psu. In that situation make sure the terminal/s are isolated with some heat shrink, the last thing you want is them coming in contact with anything metal inside the psu. Also be sure to secure the wires so there's no chance of them coming loosing and getting stuck in the fan.

    sata power connectors

    Guys

thanks for the advice i will look at how to hide the unwanted 6+2 cables, went with the idea of sleeving 2 6 pin cables which i can plug into modular slots in psu. Still gives redundancy for 8 pin cards should i get one.

Having sleeved 2 6 pin and 3 sata cables i am now left with sata power cable which has 3 plugs around 3 inch apart is there a good guid to removing sata power connectors? has anyone attempted it before?

    thanks as always

Depends on the Sata power connectors. Some are Insulation Displacement and some are terminated.
