I'm no expert, but I thought two things ... 1. 480w seems rather low for this rig, but that might be just me? 2. That RAM seems awfully expensive. If you're going to go to that price for the RAM, then you might as well go an extra £10-15 higher and get 6GB of RAM.
okay..updated! Antec Three Hundred Case Black - £38.69 Intel Core i5-750 Quad Core 2.66GHz 8MB Processor - £144 Zotac GeForce GTX 260 576Mhz 896MB PCI-Express 2.0 x16 DVI - £119 Asus S1156 Intel P55 ATX DDR3 Audio & Gigabit Ethernet - £119 Samsung SpinPoint 320GB 7200RPM S300 16MB - £32 Xilence XP480-12R Power 480W Quiet PSU - £41 Best Value Sony 24x Internal DVDRW SATA Black Bare - £15 Corsair Memory Corsair 6GB 1600MHz DDR3 CL9 - £115 CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus Cooler - £19 so, is the concensus that the powersupply is a little low? or will it suffice? motherboard okay? Thanks in advance!
no dont get 6gb, get this: http://www.dabs.com/products/corsai...buffered-50TW.html?refs=4294951079-4294953914 this power supply would be better: http://www.dabs.com/products/corsair-memory-550w-vx-psu-4Q0T.html?refs=48870000
480W would be fine if it was a decent quality PSU...but it's not, and it doesn't have enough amps on the +12V rail to power a GTX 260 - ideally you need 36 minimum, and that PSU only has 31. Unfortunately Dabs isn't the cheapest place in the world and they have an atrocious selection of RAM. If I were you I'd just look at getting some G. Skill Ripjaws (or anything else rated at 1.5V) separately from another store (ebuyer and novatech both stock them and offer free delivery). You don't want to pay for 6GB of RAM because a) it's more than you really need, b) those are triple channel sets designed for X58 motherboards so are rated at a higher voltage, and c) because Lynnfield CPUs only have a dual channel memory controller you only want to fill your DIMMs in multiples of 2 (i.e. using either 2 or 4 sticks of RAM), otherwise it won't run in dual channel mode. That set is rated at 1.8V, which is higher than Intel recommend (you'll want to keep it under 1.65V IIRC) - this set would be more suitable, even though it's a little more expensive.

just built meself a new rig for £500 mark and well chuffed with it, here's a few thoughts : *as mentioned ram seems damn expensive, corsair xms3 4gig only cost me £80 less than a month back and though i dunno how i5 memory costs the 6gb triple channel option doesn't seem much more than what you linked *get a spinpoint f3 if you can (unfortunately dabs only seem to sell the 1TB version which is twice the price for 3x the storage) - 320gb really isn't much when you can get 500gb western digital caviar blue from dabs for about the same price and same performance *PSU is fine for single graphics card - your mobo can do crossfire and SLI at 8x (enough for a 260 or similar) but it has 1 6pin pci-e and is low power (theres a pc power supply calculator around somewhere, 500w is around enough for 2xgraphics and 1/2HD but the commonly held conscientious is this is a PC part you don't want to skimp on as any upfront costs will be repaid by reliability, efficiency and upgradability later) plus not 80%+ certified so i really would reconsider. better spend an extra 10-20quid and have cheaper running costs and upgradability a year down the line than having to buy a whole new PSU - i've read corsair as pretty much universally well reviewed. you seem to have done your reading, a 216core 260 beats a 5770 atm if it's cheaper and graphics cards are gonna stay the same for about the next 6 months with pointless revisions as nvidia kill time to the new seris and ati happily counter any updates. worth noting i'd stick a tenner on for a good 120mm fan for front your case (got one of those new sharkoon golfballs with variable leads myself, tad pricey and short lead but i like the idea of a modular RPM cable without dicking around with software/firmware) <edit> check your updated list, you have some stuff listed twice. also seem to recall a CPC review a few months back on i5's needing lower power ram and having triple channel support, though i believe the 3chan speeds over 2 sticks was firmly in the 'meh' range - check this youself or listen to someoneone with more i5/i7 knowwhats than me :S

Don't forget to remove that other PSU I'd also change the hard drive to this one (I know it says it's the Ecogreen version, but they're the F2 drives, and the page clearly says it's the faster F3 version. You may want to double check with them on this, it may just be a typo). And what's the point of that post? The OP already said he has to get everything from dabs, so why go and spec everything up on Scan when it's pretty much exactly the same build, but more expensive and with an inferior CPU cooler and case, and a slower GPU

that HD's a f2, they are slower than f1's. wd caviar blues are on par with f1's but f3's are apparently far faster for similar price - grab HD from another site or get the caviar. i'd also note that clicking a 'finance' option on a website brings a banker somewhere to orgasm and you are better off shopping around (scan do a luberly insurance option and are decently priced, ebuyer are probably my favorite site) <edit> http://www.samsung.com/global/busin...72&type=61&subtype=78&model_cd=439&ppmi=1170#
oh...just a thought... this is my first build so im a bit of a noob - do I need to buy any extras? IE. Cables, thermalpaste etc?
As I said, I'm not sure. It says F3, but it also says Ecogreen, which is their F2 range. You're probably best off asking to find out so you know what you're getting.
no you wont, it will come with the hardware you buy. also i strongly recommend you look at my recommendation from scan above... i wouldnt buy that setup my self, but that's me.
tenner on extra front case fan, the threehundred only has roof and rear fitted fans but loads of room for more (dabs don't seem to stock sharkoon eagles) £3 on thermal spooge, most CPU fans come with it pre-applied but it ain;t much more to have a spare tube around incase you need to change anything ( i think the arctic silver m3 was what i got) make sure you have a dvi lead for your monitor <edit> check above link, official site lists it as an f2 which is the low power low performance range
