I finally got my new PC. i7920, 6gb Ram, 2 x 750gb HDD, Nvidia 975 GTX ! Following lots of forum chats, I was persuaded to get VISTA 64bit, ....... 1. They said it would be faster as it can use all the memory,... 2. They said it would be more stable cos it's 64bit!.... 3. They said, it's now fully developed and will support virtually all hardware!.... 4. They said, it's got a compatibility mode and will run all your software!..... Thus far.... 1. Probably does use all the Ram! 2. Freezes now and then, and, When surfing, goes slower and slower till it stops and IE Explorer stops responding, then system wont shut down without turning the power off, not even Task Manager works. 3. Had to buy, new router, new scanner, new printer, new joystick! 4. My favourite games wont even load, Il2 Stormovik, Heroes of the pacific, card creation prog, etc etc. Even Adobes Flash is not 64 bit compatible. I have pre ordered WIn 7 (32 bit) and am looking for a copy of XP in the meantime. Has anyone else had problems with 64 bit. The MS forums are full of similar problems which surprise surprise, are all blamed on "possible", conflicts with security type progs, nothing specific though! Any help will be appreciated. Note* I am OK with hardware, but software stumps me completely.
What service pack are you running? Did you install on a fresh partition? Did you install the motherboard drivers? What are your temperatures for the CPU? What motherboard? Why did you have to buy a new Router? If your scanner and printer is VERY old, then, yes, you would have likely had to buy new but many companies have made 64-bit drivers for Vista for many years now. Your new 6GB of memory will be wasted on a 32-bit system - you'll lose half of that capacity. Microsoft is not responsible for how 3rd party software uses its system and most of MS forums are because people don't know how to use a PC or what the real cause is. The automatic and default response is often "Oh its Windows" even when it isn't. We use 64-bit OS' exclusively in our office for work and testing and we've never had a serious issue since SP1 honestly.
1. that's the whole point of buying RAM 2. IE is your problem 3. as Bindi said, why need new router? new scanner, printer, may be, but they'd have to be really old 4. IL2 doesn't work. true. but it's the developer's problem, not the fact your system is 64bit. i've been using Vista 64bit on release, and just installed Win7 64bit a few days ago. all working perfectly fine. do try out win7 64bit, there's a troubleshooting wizard that walks you through application compatibility based problems. also as Bindi said, installing 32bit on 6GB RAM is madness, switch to 64bit Win7!
All your issues are driver/hardware/software related, not Windows. Sorry, matte you complain on the wrong thing. If you did your research, you were warned against old peripherals, moreover, we said 32-bit software will run under 64-bit Windows, we NEVER said 16-bit applications. Look for patch for your games, or some hacked up game patch (reprogrammed in 32-bit) to make it run under your Windows 64-bit. Also, did you try running the game under real admin (see compatibility tab, under the Properties panel, of the shortcut/executable). Most old games require real admin to run, such issue will be the same if you have a 32-bit Windows Vista/7. If they have XP 64-bit drivers they MAY work under Win7 64-bit (peripherals only). Remember that you need to run the installation as "XP" via compatibility mode, else they will say a "wrong OS" message, which is true. For your printer, look for a driver from another printer using the same internal processor. You can contact the printer manufacture for assistance. In my case I have the HP LaserJet 1012... it had not Vista drivers, I used the HP LaserJet 1015... now the HP drivers refused to installed as it was looking for that printer, BUT Windows disk had the 1015 driver in the disk, so I used that. Now I can print just fine. In my case there were many other drivers that I could have used. Look for the same thing on your printer. I contacted HP and they helped me. I know this is a project that should not happen, but that is because you have an old printer, and that is the printer manufacture that went "Hey Vista is out!, Let's force people to change their printers!!! LOLOLOL!!!!1111111one one eleven. We are soooo smart, our customers are soooooo stupid and retarded". So now you know they will probably do this for every Windows version, so I suggest a different brand. In my case my Vista 32/64-bit driver where released at some point, but for pissing me off, I won't get HP anymore. Simple as that. If you use a 32-bit O.S: 1- It should not boot because you you have more than 4GB of RAM (BSOD) 2- If it does boot, you will only be able to use 3.0 to 3.7 GB of RAM 3- you lock down your CPU. 4- You purchased a 64-bit CPU, which goes to waist.. you could have save a bundle of cash by going with a P4.. as it's 32-bit CPU.. slower, but at least you don't cash out a fortune for the 64-bit part which you don't even use. 5- You are freaking out for some reason, and your ARE NOT THINKING, because of it. Your OS has nothing to do with your router at all... either you lie, or it broke and you blame it on Windows. Adobe Flash is not 64-bit yet, but that doesn't mean you can't use Flash. Firefox and other web browser are in 32-bit therefore 32-bit java/Flash and other plug-ins will run under it. Internet Explorer 8 is provided in 32 AND 64-bit form. 32-bit is set as the default web browser after Windows installation exactly for this reason.
I've got Il2 working on my Vista 64bit. Don't remember having to do anything 'special' either to get it to work. And as has already been said, IE is terrible. And the router won't be bothered whether its vista or whatever, its a router, you don't install router drivers.
that's strange, my housemate and i spent ages trying to get IL2 working. it was to do with the protection software. fantastic post by goodbyte there. the key thing people seems to forget is don't blame the OS, blame the user.
Thanks All for the replies. You are all right in a way! I was getting so mad I just had to slag it off. The mobo is an ASUS p6T del ver 2, the OS is SP2, all the drivers were, I hope, installed by "PC Specialist" when they built it, I dont know how to check the temperatures, they didnt load the extras that come on the mobo disc as far as I know. My printer, HP 720C, should have worked according to HP/MS, but simply froze after switching it on, anyway now have HP4480. Old speedtouch ADSL moded not compatible with Vista, & no longer supported by Thompson. SO, got Belkin 125+ router so my wife can go online with her Dell laptop, (Vista 32bit) and her system is just fine! Note, it has McAfee security? Joystick probably worn out, got a new one anyway. Think your'e right about it being IE + 3rd party security. Got AVG 8.5 free + Zone Alarm free. Will try shutting them down one at a time to see if it is the problem. Have noticed since post that it happens very quickly if a website contains video clips, especially if Flash type, but also sometimes with Media player? I am sure this has been covered elsewhere, but what security progs do you Vista users have on your systems? You all sound so knowledgable I feel a bit, (Lot) ignorant and believe it or not, 12 years ago I used to build them though I never touched the software side. Again, any help very welcome Chris
I think he said he used to (speedtouch modems are old and mostly usb) but that he bought a news modem/router becuse it didn't work with vista. IL2 worked fine on Vista 64 with same specs. Built and installed by me though.
sounds like he was using one of those crappy usb modems sent out by ISP's in days gone by, no wonder it didn't work. If you want to check temperatures download speedfan, its a great little app for that sort of thing http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php If you want to check if all your drivers are installed check the device manager in control panel, if theres anything with a red cross through it then the driver isn't there / isn't installed.
Some modems have both USB and Ethernet.... maybe yours has Ethernet and you never knew about it. I happen to some people I knew. Just the fact to using Ethernet then USB there internet went a little faster.
1. configure your page file and system startup processes better, there are a few guides, I've got 8gb of ram and at boot mine only sits at about 1.2gb of ram used 2. The freezes in IE and Chrome aren't caused by Vista, they are caused by mainly Flashplayer. I've had the same problems, you need to goto the adobe site and download the 64-bit update, which fixes most of the problems but you still get the occasional crash, stupid Adobe. 3. Gutted, I had the same problem with my webcam. What you can do if you are handy with a screwdriver is: unscrew the scanner/joystick etc, look for the ICB and write down the number on the chip. You'll find most chips are used universally with other joysticks/scanners and can be used with other products drivers. As for the router, that shouldn't have mattered, if it's plugged into your network card it only needs to pickup an IP address. 4. Have you tried changing the .exe and .bat files to compatibility mode with XP SP2, you right click, properties then change compatibility mode. My Red Alert original works on my Vista 64 although it's way too fast to be playable. If you really don't like 64bit Vista, then you probably aren't going to have much more luck with Vista 7 64-bit....although with the XP virtual mode you might be able to run some games(not many 3d accelerated though, because 3d acceleration isn't supported through virtual mode)
I would wait til Windows 7 gets fully released. try the RC Version I run the 64bit version and its flawless. Had some wireless network card issues but that was fixed
Out of interest, is the page file size total ram size + some extra hard disk, or just the extra hard disk? In other words if you had 4gigs or ram and a 3gig page file, would you get only 3gigs of ram seen, or 4gigs of ram plus 3 gigs of hard disk? Sorry to hijack, seemed mildly relevant
Page file is on your HDD, it doesn't change your RAM amount. It is there so that in the case where you are out of RAM, it can use move some least unused memory date form the RAM to the HDD, so that there is space on the RAM for the application that needs it. Without page file, if you are out of RAM, the application that requires more RAM than free will crash on you. Page file size is the size of your RAM by default. Setting a larger amount will not increase your RAM. Also, HDD (even the fastest SSD that you can buy) is super incredibly slow over your RAM.
This isn't really 100% related to this topic but I feel like most people take free RAM as an important measure of performance - which they absolutely 100% should not. Yes, if you have too much crap running you will run out of RAM and things will start to go bad, but RAM is there to be used. Lots of XP tweaking programs had utilities that would free up RAM for "increased performance", but in reality the only thing that happened was all open applications got slower because they were shifted to the page file. So dumb Also, there actually is a 64-bit native Flash plugin, but it's Linux only for now. Not sure why they did that...
