I gave up on finding a 64-bit distribution for Mandrake... I have a few questions now...

    1) I read somewhere that 32-bit distributions work fine on 64-bit Cpu's... Is this true? Is there diminished performance if so?

    2) What other distros have 64 bit versions? I know that SuSe 9.1 has a 64-bit distro, but the only mirrors didn't have ISO's... How would I get it to be a boot CD (or dvd) if I had to download all the files individually?

    Thanks in advance.

yes, that's true, just like all the people that run 32-bit windows on a 64-bit cpu*

(*a64, as it has both 32-bit and 64-bit extensions)

    you could always do fedora

I have Fedora, and it won't install. It hangs at:

    Running install...
    Running /sbit/loader

I've tried both the DVD and CD isos, and both of my drives. I searched google and found that a lot of people have had this problem, but no solutions to it.

And I've heard that Gentoo isn't very user-friendly. I used Mandrake 7 a little bit a while ago, but that's my only experience so far...

how long did you let it sit at starting /sbin/loader?

anaconda usually takes a little while to start

I let it sit for like 4-5 minutes. On top of that, I could type and it would display on the screen. I couldn't perform any commands or anything, I could just type and it would display...

    well, that's hardware incompatability

so I guess fedora won't work right :D

anyway, if you rtfm, gentoo can be very user friendly, I've heard portage isn't that great, but it can be very, fast, and useful

the initial instal is not to user friendly in Gentoo.

But it is very well documented.
and after you get it installed it's as simple as.

    emerge xxx

with xxx what you and to install.
    Te rest is fully autiomated

Okay, I'll try that then. I read that it wasn't user-friendly, so I didn't even bother looking into it anymore... Hopefully this will work, heh.

The main difficulty with Gentoo is that you have to compile everything, but
you do end up with an OS that is tailor-made for your exact system.

Rubbish, Portage is the dogs danglies! It's incredibly simple to use, incredibly powerful, and you won't get stuck in dependancy hell like with rpms or even apt.

If there were only one reason to use Gentoo it's Portage...

SuSE 9.1 isn't free, that's why you cannot download it.
All you can get it's their Live CD to give SuSE a try. ;)

Of course, all this doesn't matter if you want to use a recent ATI video card, as they don't have 64-bit linux drivers yet :wallbash:

It was free when first installed it ~6months ago.

And I've just checked. It still is :p
