with the rig in my sig will I benefit paying the extra £3 for vista home premium 64bit over 32bit. I mostly play games, occasionally some Photoshop, listen to music. nothing too taxing! also, the time between now and SP1 I was thinking about taking the plunge onto Ubuntu. for what I use my PC for is that a wise idea? I'm mainly asking because I have used the CD key on my copy of XP too many times (stupid MS) and feel as if it may be time to go Vista. I can't be asked to sort it properly and I have 28 days to do so. Edit: Whoops, kinda put it in the wrong forum. My bad
I think I'm the user that used by windows XP CD key waaaayyy to much... I re-install that crappy OS every 2-3month. I have to call them everytime, and yet I have no problem. Moreover, since I purchased WinXP, it was installed on my machine that changed over 4 times, and still got no issues with MS. I think the idea of the calling system, is just psychological. If you have a copied illegal licensed, you won't dare to call and ask activation, in the fear that MS will know and take you to court, or fine you, or something like that. 32-bit has a slightly better compatibility rate over its 64-bit version, due to some bad programmer some company have, or bad managerial decisions that was taken place. For me I use Steinberg WaveLab, were even their latest version is anti-64-bit OS (XP and Vista). It's shame as I want to go with 64-bit OS, and I paid a nice fortune to pay that software. In your case, I see no problem, I would say go with 64-bit OS, and unlock your CPU potential by usingits 64-bit architecture, and allow you to have more then 4GB of RAM or have 4GB of RAM.
I hate CD keys, if piracy and crap wasn't such a massive problem everything would be so easy. I may go to Ubuntu for a couple of months just because that is the possibility. We have Vista at school and ... well I suppose it's different to XP and so I'm not sure how I feel about it. especially seeing as its locked for school. no fun stuff included. We shall see, SP1 seems inviting, Im sure I would end up getting an extra gig of RAM because that would make life easy I suppose. With games (CoD4 mainly) what is the change on performance with Vista from XP (DX9 to 10) I don't really keep up to date with this type of thing
yah, i used my cd key a few too many times too. then i got a cracked copy so i wouldn't have to worry about it. it's pretty sad that i have to "steal" software that i have fully paid for just to get it to work. vista sp1 release candidate is available now. if you plan on doing any gaming you still need a copy of windows. dual-boot ubuntu if you want to try it.
the whole compatibility issue is what annoys me, I know if I reinstall windows once every thirty days I can postpone the "no cd key rubbish" while using ubuntu to see what its like and xp for gaming (although I know I will really just use XP as Im lazy) lets see what happens after 28 days, I will be back at school, A levels means no real time for gaming. I have downloaded Ubuntu, I will take the plunge soon enough. PS. how much HDD space do I need for dual booting XP and Ubintu. I have 50GB set aside for OS's atm. will that be suffice for the both?
Just call MS... Takes 5 minutes and be done with the hassle... Ubuntu takes about 2GB, 10 is more then pleny for normal needs...
Im so lazy and hate phones that the former is just a major hassle to me the latter is very helpful though, I really want to try Linux as it's one of those things you hear about but until you take the plunge you never know exactly what people mean!
