Hi my mate broke a chip off his 6800 gt and just got a 6800 ultra (he is minted) it been sitting in his room and i asked him could i have a go at fixing it .. Ok first Q. Is arctic sliver conductive as he seem to have got it on parts of the card And any one know if it possible just to solder a new or the old chip that had fallen off. thanks
AS5 is conductive around those areas of the card, I'd get that cleaned off ASAP. What you need to find out now is the numbers on the chip that has come off, you may be able to find one in an electronics shop somewhere. Doesn't look to hard to solder it back on EDIT: Welcome to the forums btw
Arctic silver is very conductive, that looks borked to me. You can re-solder chips, but it's very difficult, I think you have a state of the art paperweight.
I just phoned him to ask him if the chip had fallen of before he put water block on in his PC he said yes (he broke the chip off putting the water block on) is there a slight chance that no electric has gotten to the chip? and what safe solvents can i use to try and get the paste off. as looks like even trace on the PCB not good.
Get yourself to a local chemists and get a bottle of Isopropyl Alcohol, put a few dabs on a Q tip and the paste should come right off
If it hasn't run it looks like you might be in luck. Isopropyl alcohol will clean it up easily, just make sure you get all of it. How are you planning on cooling the card?
its got to be worth a go mate. get it off him and have a go at it itd be great if it worked out, good luck
Well he has lost the screws for the stock cooler all that was in the box was this the ultra cooller (also no screws) an AC Twinplex Chipset (AMD) new and a eheim pump that leaks i post a pic of how he tried to fix it (i would of used pumber sealent) so i might get a water block or a arctic cooler as i have one in my shuttle on x800 runs at 29c
Your'e mate sounds like an absoulte arse... Just how cack handed is he? Nice of him to give you it though. *8>
Arctic silver is not that conductive. It should not affect the GPU, but still just clean off the most of it and it should be OK. You'll find it tricky to solder back the bit that broke off --it is possible, but tricky. Do not use more than 25W on your iron and a fine tip. It may help to sort of temporarily superglue the component in place (with a small drop of glue, not covering the contacts) and then slowly melt the solder on the contacts to re-merge.
this is the bloke that at the tbg 16 lan was attempting to poke the air out his loop with a pencil :O , i think he should be given a slap for a being a complete numpty
I think you should be given a badge for being a fat smelly gay with too much money to spend. ^ ^ ^ No prizes for guessing that this post is by the numpty in question... --nexxo
I think you should be banned for joining just to insult someone. oh wait... ...welcome to the banned club.
Excellent comeback, Fly Amazing work on that card... just wow. AS5 is "99.9% nonconductive" IIRC, though you may or may not be able to salvage it. I'd HIGHLY suggest using Ceramique or other "white pastes" (ASC is the best imo though) on GPUs.
First thing i would do is get a very very very small paint brush (like the ones you can find in water color paint sets) and clean that thing
Well thanks guys, first plan is to clean it with Isopropyl Alcohol as suggested with cotton ear buds and then glue/solder as suggested. then pray it works and i get free gfx card thanks to spazmochad for giving me his spare cooler (haha u got banned if that is you humm not might be) oh ed for bumming it in first place i will update with pics next week i hope
if you get it fixed i would seriously recommend testing in a rig that is somewhat sacrifical, if you can. you dont want to ruin your rig testing a vid card. give it back to your friend and get himto test it, like you said, hes minted.
First thing, get that gunk off of it (as people have already said). Second, buy an arctic cooler for it. Third, replace the capasitor that was knocked off with one from here. Although I've no idea which one you need! Could I get a picture of the other capasitors around that area? It will most likely be a case of re-soldering a new capasitor on there, cleaning off the gunk and then sticking an arctic cooler on there. ..hopefully
AS5 wont be an issue, the lack of working is most likely due to the. Its not that conductive, so shouldnt cause any problems It's worth cleaning the crap off though. You also shouldnt need anywere near that much thermal goop, a small rice sized amount will be plenty.... If you want it fixing, but don't feel you can, drop me a PM I'll put you in touch with a man who can. (Trust me if its fixable, he'll do it )
that capasitor is lost ed says (if he looked for it even) so i think number is 49 100 16a reading from the same gfx card my brother has any one have a idea or could point me right location for the capasitor as cant find it were samor said
