It's pretty back-and-forth IMO between 8GB of slower RAM and 4GB of fast RAM. They both have pros and cons.

here in the states 2 x 4870 1 gb cards cost less and outperform the 4870x2...2 x 4830 512 mb cards cost less and outperform the 4890...2 x gtx 260 896 mb cards cost less and outperform the gtx 285...should i continue? what about those crossfire/sli setups doesnt make sense? people need to do a little research before posting, would certainly lessen the confusion...

    Is it 2 8800GT or 8800GTS(320/640) or 8800GTS(G92 512mb)?

And either way it'll be cheaper to just get 1 powerful card. Or get a cheap NVS card, if you really want to make a workstation.

Anyways, for $700 it's okay, but just cut down on the psu, that thing is huge, and make sure your case is adequate, if it's too small, that would be sad wouldn't it?

    Hmmmm....

You can do SLI, I'm guessing you got it from newegg. Thing is though, you probably would've benefited more from a GTX 275. Unless you don't want to return it, but still it's a pretty decent buy, old cards though.

    I can.

    - Adobe apps
    - Modeling apps
    - GTA IV (I've seen it hit 4.5GB several times)
    - Virtual machines
    - RAM disk
    - Future proofing
    - Combinations of the above

    EXACTLY.

8GB is NOT that outlandish. And while futureproofing is often not the best idea to get the most out of your money, 8GB isn't exactly a mouthful of money anymore.

DDR2 RAM is dirt cheap to the point where if someone wants 8GB of RAM (given enough slots), it's not difficult, not even on your wallet (not that expensive).

There is a point in which supply drops, and the price goes up again- i've witnessed this with DDR memory, and you don't wanna wait around for that to happen. There's no harm in getting 8GB.

At least this is what i've observed and analyzed. I may be wrong in some instances, and I apologize sincerely if I am.

I still class most of those as atypical :p I'm sure by the time I need 8GB we'll be on DDR4 so I don't see it as that useful for future proofing (and I dev and use multiple virtual machines at once!). As a slight aside I'm impressed by GTA IV... not many games will use more than the 2GB of RAM that 32-bit processes are limited to!

really the benifits of 1 card over 2 in crossfire or sli are :-

    1. one card is generally cooler
    2. Less power usage
    3. PCI slots generally get blocked by coolers
    4. Drivers aren't always reliable for SLI/crossfire
    5. Most of the time 2 cards cost more than one tho obvously that changes depending on the market
