I'm a bit embarrassed to admit this...

But i have no idea where to begin with converting some of my blurays to 720p h.264 in a .mp4 container for my iPad (also would be a handy format for my laptop).

Previously when i used to convert DVDs to h.264 .mp4 for my PS3 i used the handy and uber simple CLI tool "dvdbackup" on Linux. More recently i've done a couple of converts to iPhone using Handbrake on MacOS.

I downloaded slysoft's AnyDVD HD for Win7, but i never got around to trying it out before the demo time ran out.

    Any pointers or tips?

EDIT: just realised there's an error above... dvdbackup doesn't spit out x.264, it just decss's the DVD and spits out an ISO, the handbrake CLI for linux did the converting... not that it matters but i couldn't leave that there :)

Shame you let the demo run out of anydvd, it works really well.

    Handbrake not any use?

I've just stumped up for a copy, doing a run with handbrake on Win7 on a DVD that's wrong region for my PS3 just now. Will see how that turns out then will give a bluray a bash with Handbrake...

It's that last bit i'm not sure will work!

I've also got CloanDVD Mobile, which works really really well, even with home video stuff from our HD camcorder downsizing to an iPhone. I know there's a stigma with the legality of the copy protection bypass elements, but the software itself is actually pretty good.

Yeah the legal side's a bug bear.

You'd think by 2011 this stuff would all be nailed so that you just slot your bluray (or A.N. Other HD medium) into iTunes (or whatever) and it magically appears on your iPhone or whatever.

Their approach is the total opposite though, they want you to buy the same film over and over again for each device you might want to watch it on.

"I'm sorry sir, you can't use a Mondeo estate for commuting to work, that's legal for shopping trips only. I'm afraid you'll have to buy a Mondeo in hatchback form too."

    Success, well part 1 anyway.

(wrong region) DVD -> AnyDVD HD -> Handbrake -> .mp4 with stereo sound for iPad, iPhone4 and MacBook Pro

I used the 16:9 "iPad and iPhone 4 (SD)" preset for handbrake from lifehacker --> http://lifehacker.com/5572037/handbrake-presets-for-your-new-ipad-or-iphone-4

Has come out pretty well if a bit on the big side (>2gb).

Wish me luck with the bluray now...

Daft question... Once done, how do you get the film onto the iPad?

It just syncs via iTunes, pretty slick to be honest. Handbrake dumps the .m4v file in the iTunes media 'add to library on startup folder' so when you connect the iPad, that causes iTunes to fire up, which causes the film to be imported, because it's unwatched it gets sync'd onto the iPad. Nice!

For bluray I think the best compromise encoding preset in handbrake I've found is the iframe setting (knocks lumps off file size) with cropping specified manually as 0 all round. Works well on iPad, iphone4 and iPhone 3GS.

Not as good for my Ps3, it really needs surround sound and at least 720p for the big screen, just too big a file to reuse for the portables.

yeah, use handbrake by using Apple TV preset or iPod touch preset is OK, or you can try iFunia video converter, it's works well on my Mac.
