Hi, at the moment i have a 750k ntl connection over two computers, one gateway and one accessing the net thought the gatway computer.

it ther anyway to control the distribution of the connection so that instead both of the computers using the 750k connection (as i understand) equaly, so that mayeb the gateway would get (for example) 60% and the other computer 40%??

    is this possible?

    cheers guys

just fed up of my sis downloading like crazy and slowing me down!!

Short answer (to the best of my knowledge): no, not with windows.

Their are 3rd pary programs thatcan do this for you, i have the same problem, i forget the names maybe someone on the fourms might know of a good tool...

Actually i think one may of been called net limiter..though many of the programs were shareware and/or trials

Or a packet shaping router. (expensive)
Or a linux router could be setup to perform packet shaping as well.

    Spent ages working this out.

Truth is I failed when using windowsXP's fantastic built-in internet connection sharing.

There's lots of things on the net I saw for linux if you can put a gateway computer together on the cheap.

Otherwise you're gonna need to find some sort of software proxy server that might have bandwidth restrictions

    Cheers Guys

    **Edit**
this one sounds right for me: Bandwidth Controller (bandwidthcontroller.com)
but there is also this one: netlimiter (netlimiter.com)

was going to say net limiter myself :)

Does exactly what i want and works very well :) You can put a limit on all the bandwidth the computer has, upload and download!

if youre running a linux based firewall: something like clarkconnect (clarkconnect.org irrc) you can get bandwidth limiting modules where you can limit the bandwidth to certain ip adresses...

Problem I found with netlimiter (never tried bandwidth controller) is that even though it did all the limiting for the gateway computer - the ICS went out to the other computers before the software was involved.

Sorry, that wasn't explained well ..... maybe...

You can control the bandwidth to the gateway machine, but not the others - they can still use up all the bandwidth if they like.

You could install the software on each pc mind.

(or I might have been doing something wrong!)

I spent several months last year trying to do this.

Net Limiter - Has to be ran on each PC, and you have to trust each user not to alter it's settings.

Bandwidth Controller - Nice idea, but it's still at version 0.x and I found that it crashed my computer every couple of hours.

The only real options I found where to use dedicated hardware (£££) or a linux distro for example, IPCop, Clarkconnect or Smoothwall with appropriate addons/modules.

the Draytek Vigor routers can do per-port bandwidth limiting :)
Your best bet might be RouterOS, you can set up QoS to split it 60/40 when it's loaded, but anyone can pull all the bandwidth if no-one else needs it... it's very customisable :)

Aside from netlimiter you would likely need to use a linux firewall, it's not too hard to setup FreeBSD on a old p133 or so and run IPFirewall.. It's very configurable..

Also in windows you could run a Squid proxy server which has built in limitations on bandwidth, however that will only restrict your web traffic.
