Ok, so my 8800GT died the other day so it needs to be replaced.

Problem is that I haven't looked at GFX cards since the 8800GT was new, so I need a bit help :)

My initial thought was to get a GTX460. Someone told me it was pretty good value. However, Since I'm running 3 displays I thought it may be a good idea to rather go for ATI HD6870 or something similar. The idea of eyefinity sounds pretty cool.

I still have a 8500Gt that I use as a secondary card, but hoped to get rid of it. I won't be buying two GTX460s though.

So this is what I need:

Run 3 displays @1920x1200 via DVI
Some gaming. Just the occational FPS. or racing.
    Low noise
    Preferably one card
Cheap as possible, but want to avoid the unusable-market.

So does anybody have any hints or tips?

Well you could try sticking the 8800 in the oven.

Hmm. Maybe I should try just for the fun of it. It may work. :)

I've fixed 5x 8800GTX like this for friends.... so far 100% success rate with no failures.

    I'm replacing my 8800GT with a GTX570, but that's a bit of a step up.

What's your budget for a replacement? If you want something equivelent in cost I suppose its a GTX460, or even the last of the 5870s for a little more.

    I tried it. Didn't work.

I did search for the problem on Google, and all the pictures I found showed an entirely different PCB layout. I guess the GT and GTX cards don't have the same problem.

(Note that my card died completely. Only the fan would run at full speed, and no picture)

Anyway, new gadget for Christmas it is ;)

    edit:

Budget is a bit hard to set as I'm in Norway, but roughly 150-200£.

As it is now I'm sort of set on the HD6870 unless there is an obvious reason for not getting it. (If it were made by Nvidia I would probably already bought it ;) )

Having read a bit about the 3 display functionality on the ATI cards, it seems like a crap way of doing it. I think I'll just go for the GTX460 plus the card I already have.

Why do you think it's a crap way of doing it?

Requires that DisplayPort be used for at least one of the displays, iirc. That'd require an active DVI-DisplayPort adapter for his setup.

Unless the 6xxx has changed this.

Exactly. Wish they implemented a proper controller for the other ports as well.

Anyway, I ended up ordering a HD6850 and a DP adapter. (The performance increase up to 6870 wasn't really worth the price difference.)

Will probably get something better the next time I upgrade the rest of my system.

It might not be a brilliant way of doing it, at least it's better than Nvidia's solution of 'buy another graphics card if you want to run 3 screens'. ;) I'm sure if there was an easy way to run 3 screens off 2x DVI + 1x HDMI then both manufacturers would have implemented it by now.

Good point. I have been running two cards so far. Neither is a good solution.

Thanks, but I'm in the wrong country ;)

The new card is on it's way in the mail at the moment. Don't think i'll be getting it before christmas, though :/
