i need a decent but el-cheapo (sub $AUD 100) vid card for a system im building. I've been using a 9200se for a while now and its prett decent, i can play Far Cry @ 1024, Med detail, full AF with 40+ fps. But obviously i cant really play any game with AA on unless i want a complete slidehow. So which should i go for, get another 9200 or try the 5200, apparently this card is better for AA and AF than the DX8.1 9200. Opinions? Please dont suggest any other cards to me as i specifically need a sub-100 dollar card.
indeed, the cards based on 9200's model (9200 se, 9200 and 9200 pro) are made for DX8, but they also support DX9 5200 is made for DX9 and that explains the little supperiority in DX9 games altought, if i should buy one of these 2 i would say 9200 because of it's supperiority in image's quality 5200 runs a little bit faster in default mode but 9200 is better with AA and AF activated
Check this out. Decide for yourself, check the benchmarks for the types of games you will play on it. You could be better off trying to pick up an old GeForceTI4XXX card if you can get it for <$100, because it'll be significantly faster.
I think it can be adequatly summarised by the following: The 5200 is like a GeForce 3. It doesnt have the performance of even a GeForce 4. It is a very poor performing video card, and thats all there is to it. If you are getting those numbers in FAR CRY on one of those, just get another one. It will save you a lot of grief. I think the 5200 is horrible. But then, this is only my opinion. If you dont care, see for yourself and show us what the truth is
I have a 5200 Ultra and a 9200 (old ones). the 5200 Ultra is faster, but, it requires way too much power. I oc'ed the 5200 U and i burnt one of the connectors... i like the 9200 but i sold it recently. i think im going to get another 9200 for my old computer system. but yea the 5200 isnt good.
Got my Ti4600 for ~$100. I'm sure with next gen it could be had for less. Or get a Ti4200, still a far better card than the Fx5200/9200. Between those two i would have to say the 9200. Although, they seem to be having a race for last... 3dmark of my average rig with Ti4600: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7766909 Highest FX5200 score on the ORB: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7594516 Highest 9200 score on the ORB: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7334756
the Ti cards are superior both 5200 and 9200, but the only problem is that they are "technologically beated" by the newer ones like 9200 and 5200 because those have DX9 support and allow you (even at low-medium settings) to play the last generation games like far cry, doom3, hl2 deus ex and many others that requires DX9 that's why i recommend that you stick to one of those 2 cards even they are weaker (my opinion is to go for the 9200, because like i said it's better in image quality and AA and AF) googd luck and keep us informed of your first impression on the card you will buy !!!
Not entirely true. The 9200 and FX5200 have only some DX9 features. The sheer power of the Ti series will make it faster, and allow higher AF and AA settings.
MHMHMHMHMHMHMHMHMHMHMWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! POST NUMBER 750! A HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!! Erm, back on topic... Either way, If you ignore the TI series of cards etc, and only take into account the 9200 and 5200, I think its fairly unanimous among the informed sources that the 9200 is basically superior for most gaming applications.
I bought a 9200 as a quick cheap replacement when I blew one of my cards up, I never thought I would play Far Cry with it. I booted it up for a laugh, and although I had to decrease the visual settings to rock bottom the game played fine and ran perfectly. It has always been my opinion that the budget cards on the market make most economical sense, and for £30 the 9200 is excellent.
I have a fx5200 and I must say it is not a great card but the only difference between a 5200 and a 5200 ultra is that they have lower frequencies. And it is VERY easy to overclock a 5200 to Ultra frequencies. So, great o/c possible with the fx5200...
