Not being a big gamer I am wondering if the expert forum members would be able to give me some advice on the above chipsets? For raw computation would the 975X be the better beast?

Any advice that can be given would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

The 975X is a good chipset by all means, but I would imagine that P35 will be better still, if only because it's a newer chipset from Intel.

Thanks Krikkit. The 965 chipset seems dead in the water (which was released after the 975X) so I though I should check before taking the plunge to the P35.

P35....At will allow you to use a higher FSB and the newer 45nm chips coming out at the end of the year (if you wanted a future upgrade in a few years time). I also noticed that when I swapped my E6600 from a P965 to a P35, it ran at a lower voltage!

P35 is, afaik, P965's direct replacement, but I would expect it's better than the classic 975X, if only because it wasn't such a sparkling chipset to start with anyway. If you want a better chipset still, there's the X38 coming soonish, which will be/is the flagship of Intel's chipset lineup. :)

P35 is next generation of intels mainboard chipsets , it was designed to replace current i965 chipset , i975 was designed as a high end chip , it can run Full speed 16x crossfire cards , the i965 does only 16x and 4x not 2x 16 , the long awaited X38 chip is to be the succesor of i975, so if you are looking for some media-gaming-video editing-stable home pc get an P35 board , they are little bit faster then i965 , they also are better overclockers then previous chipsets. The i965 chipset tops out @ 500Mhz FSB range while P35 based boards can do 500Mhz from the bat, 600Mhz fsb are not uncommon ;]

Simply put it P35 board is FOR YOU a good choice .

Only advantages of 975x are x8/x8 crossfire as opposed to x16/x4 and the fact that it has native IDE. Unless you are going to run crossfire or use a lot of IDE drives, there is no reason to buy one now. If you do want to run crossfire, I would still wait for x38, which should hopefully overclock better like P35 and P965 did.(975x boards tend to have lower FSB maxes then other chipsets)

the general consensus in this thread is correct - I wouldn't look back at a 975X board... either drop moolah on a P35 board now (there are some great boards out there by the way) or wait for X38. :)
