    Hey,
After finding an increase in memory will cost more than i initially though, i have decided a new graphics card would be the best option.

I'm looking at around £120, and i have spotted the Asus V9950GE GeForce FX 5900 128MB going for £126 at overclockers.co.uk.

Now, thats good.. but will it beat the performance of a 9800pro?

Even if it doesn't at stock, i hear 5900s clock amazingly well. When both are clocked, which will come out on top? Cheers.

It wont beat it stock... But with some OCing, this video card will beat the sh*t out of a 9800 Pro. :)

Yes overclocked and maybe BIOS flashed to a 5950 but youll need to ask someone who knows about flashing the 5900 series, i got no idea, lol..

    Really??

A Quick search on futuremark ORB shows the top 20 9800 PROs scoring from 7532 to 8010. The FX5950 ULTRAs top 20 score from 5852 to 7829

Search done using approved drivers with any CPU and clockspeed.
With non-approved nvidia drivers (the ones with tweaks designed specifically to increase 3D Mark score) the ultras top out at 8900 ish. Quite a jump, but futuremark has decided those drivers are 'cheating'.

Also sh0uld be pointed out that the top 5950 was done with a flashed 5900+and a prometia with an intel @ 4.2GHz.
    The top 9800PRO was with an A64 @ 2.8GHz.

    In 3D Mark 2k1, the top 9800PRO is 29000+. The top 5950 is 28000.

Make of it what you will......

I had a 5900xt flashed to 5950U and overclocked it. Then I bought a 9800se and run omega drivers at PRO and it kicks the crap out of the 59"50" card.

Flymo, ATI cards are well known to score better on '03.

I also wouldn't judge the cards performance by the highest scores... as some people get lucky.. or are indeed godlike and get the highest 9800"pro" score on the ORB with a 9800SE softmodded (e.g. macci). I am more wondering about the "average" overclock from each cards. (whatever that is?)

Also mrplow, the XT will be worse than the 5900, as it has worse memory, etc. so even if it were flashed it would still be slower. And what did you judge it being slower on?

I know that sounds like i'm completely trashing what people are saying, i'm not, just if anyone has any benchmarks, etc. that would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

the futuremark ORB will tell you lots of things, but it isnt a reliable source of info, and hell knows why they dont like the 56xx drivers for nvidia because the image quality is better than the others and the performance in games is better as well

i had a gainward 5900 which clocked right up to 575/1020 after being flashed

stock speeds, the 5900 got beat out comfortably by a 9800pro but at its max overcock it trounced a 9800XT, and the 9800XT at its max overclock just about managed to match it

i the 5900s to be good at stock but overclock especially well and compare to 9800s easily

    What sort of scores?
    My 9800XT gets just over 8000 overclocked. My 128MB 9800PRO (R360 Core)flashed to 9800XT scores 7500+

This is one of those questions that will NEVER get answered to everyones satisfaction. 3D Marks really dont mean dog-poo. What you need to do is to get benchmarks for the games YOU play and see how it stands. One thing I HAVE noticed though is that if you play at higher res than 1024X768, the a radeon seems to be the only answer as EVERY bench out there shows that with resolution higher than this and with AA And AF turned on, the 9800Series just romps ahead of the nvidia cards for almost every game (there are exceptions of course.....)

HERE is a pretty good roundup.

i did a very exhausted test comparing the 2 cards using about 10 different games with actual gameplay taking the averages
the only thing 3Dmark is good for is comparing scores on the same system, ie comparing overclocked and stock speeds on a graphics card

you should know better than to link to THG as well :p

THG says the 5900 has 8x1, it has infact got 4x2. There so damn inaccurate.

Also, why is [H] in the bit-tech affiliates?!

So, mister_tad. You're saying get the Asus for sure?

I just need directly telling before i split with my £130 :blah:

if the 5900 doesnt overclock especially well then you will be better off with a 9800Pro, as at stock settings the 9800Pro will be better

at the end of the day they're both fast, comes down to preference mostly
personally i dont care much for ATI drivers and like NVidia drivers much better

edit: just checked the card out and it apprears to be a 5900XT, which may not flash to a 5950, in which case the 9800Pro would be a better choice

Hmm, are you sure about that?

    http://www.asus.com/products/vga/v9950ge/overview.htm

EDIT: Ok, it seems the "GE" is a v9950SE shipped with a different software package. The "SE" uses worse memory than the normal 5900, so i don't really want it. BUT, i found this and it has no "SE" or "GE" or anything, so i'm thinking it's a really FX5900. Anyone know if the Gigabyte card will clock well?
