Sorry about all the questions but what the hell is the difference between CORSAIR TWINX DDR Dual-Channel Memory Kits & CORSAIR XMS TwinX PRO SERIES MEMORY.

There is about £20 - £30 difference, and it would seem it's £30 for some flashing lights?!

I'm suprised at how many contradictions there are with all this technology, it makes it really hard for n00bs like me. I just want a friggin amazing PC :wallbash:

Ok, so maybe i'll get a Nvidia card, but won't Halflife 2 have some slight glitches using an Nvidia therefore?

    got it in one mate...

I have the non pro version, and it's uber-l337! Don't bother with the pro, total waste of money for a few led's.

Personally I'd never buy a crt monitor again, I'd rethink that if I were you. Especially as ebuyer (I hate the company, but their prices are nice) have some fantastic deals on tft's at the moment. There was a nice 18.1" tft for about £270 in their last email.

Half life 2 will have no problems with an NVIDIA card, like Doom 3 has no problems with an ATI card.

Exactly. It's not going to be as hard for NVIDIA to catch up in HL2 as it is for ATI to catch up in DOOM 3.

All the ones I've seen that are only just affordable only do 1280 X 1024 resolution?!?!?!? All graphics cards do way over that now, so how come they're so limited?

Because most of the time you get a poor power supply, at least if you buy from a company like raidmax. Raidmax make crap PSU's.

The 3200XL ram will be better than the 4000 stuff for the A64 imo. (They like the low latency stuff) Unless you want to overclock, but the 3200XL is rated for 500mhz anyway. Take a look at the review on this site.

As what others have said too, dont skimp on a power supply. I had an old 400w unbranded PSU, and had all sorts of problems with it. Pay the money now for a good one, and it will probably outlast you!

As for the 6800/X800 debate, imho its for fps benchmark junkies only. (With not a lot else to do apart from quibble over tiny numbers)
Whichever one you decide to get, you will be more than happy with it, and it will handle anything you can throw at it right now, and for a good while longer too. Pick one based on price/features and the package helps out too, some come with a few games etc. This goes for all the different manufacturers of the cards too. The only thing that really seperates them is the package. But if you read alot of reviews, you might find that some overclock better than others, come with different/better designed coolers etc. So read up as much as possible.

Soundcard, audigy2zs. Great for games, although the analy retentive audiophiles out there will swear blind it sounds horrible with anything else. :D Sounds bloody great to me, and a better solution than onboard audio any day of the week.

Get some nice rounded IDE cables for your optical drives, it helps airflow, and looks better if you go for a case with a window etc etc.

Everything is subject to different opinions of course.(And i by no means advocate that mine is any better than anybody elses) Best bet is to pick your way through as much advise as possible, and pick items that are the best you can afford. So far, the setup you have in mind will be bloody blinding. If you get a good cpu, good mobo, ram and graphics card then your onto a winner.
Other stuff like Hdd's, optical drives etc probably wont make a blind bit of difference in performance terms. Sure the raptor might load stuff up 0.346 seconds faster than something else, but does it really matter?

    Would you say this:

    Corsair (TWINX1024-4000PT) 1024MB (2 x 512MB Matched Pair), DDR500 / PC4000, non-ECC, Unbuffered, 3-4-4-8, Lifetime Warranty, Silver Heat Spreader £193

    Is the same as this:

    Corsair® 1024MB TwinX Dual Memory (2 x 512MB) XMS
    4000 DDR 500MHz (TWINX1024-4000PT) £207.92

I wouldn't bother with PC-4000. I don't think Athlon 64's can overclock that far. I would take DanMcr's suggestion, go for the Corsair 3200XL.

Are they both from the same website?? Look the same to me. What are the timings on the second set?

As i said before though, the A64's fly with cas2 stuff. And there is room for overclocking up to 4000 speeds with good timings too.
