I have an old computer I took apart and then put together. Now when I try to turn it on, I get a few beeps, but nothing activates. Keyboard lights flash but then are blank. Monitor is not activated. What's up?

2 of them are short, one is a slight bit longer. And it re-beeps once after a while

Who is the manufacturer of your motherboard? Look up their support site and see what the beeps mean.

:waah: Concluded with a friend that it's the video card. What could be the matter? :waah:

See attached pic. I have a few things disconnected, as you can see. Is it ok that they are not connected?

According to this it would appear that the BIOS can not initialize a video screen. Try it with a different video card and see if it works.

I have an 8x AGP card, that is a 2x card. This is a 5-year-old computer. Would the 8x work?

I'm pretty sure that it won't work. Do you have anything else?

hehe, i dont know why but this thread made me laugh (it reminded me of vintage benny hill at the beginning) lol

Ok firstly, open up your case and study the motherboard for a model number. You need to find out exactly what it is, then try to d/l the manual for it. You should be certain what the beep code means before attempting anything IMO.

If it is a GFX card problem then a new card may or may not work. There is more than one AGP standard (not the 2x, 4x etc). If that GFX card is AGP 1.0 then chances are it wont work with your new one (in fact it may fry your new one). The motherboard manual will tell you what standard it complies to. Your 8x card is probably an AGP 2.0 standard, it uses less volts (about 1/2) so you can see the potential dangers.

If i were you i'd get the manual and start diagnostics again, but its definately worth resetting the CMOS and reseating everything.
