I was wondering, do gigabit lan hubs exist ? if so where can they be bought from in the uk ?

Also, where can hardware firewalls be bought from, in the uk ?

    i doubt gigabit hubs exist

    but switches do

they can be bought from any good computer hardware shop

but there way 2 expensive at the moment for home use

and also most hard drives only run at 100mbit so theres no point

I know there's not much point in the gigabit hub, but me and some m8s are having a lan, we all have gigabit NICs, so we want to run the games at this speed, as we feel there's no point in running the games on 100mbits/s when we have the potential to run it faster.

and this would work pretty much the same as a 10/100 hub, only faster ?

all games arnt going to use more than a few 100k/s so theres no point of having 1 when 100mbit switchs are cheaper

and as most hard drive speeds are about 100mbits they cant write any quick than that

    Most harddrives are like 30-60mb/sec

As for the hub Im not sure if it would be the same but i dont see why it wouldnt....Just read up on it a lil....Im sure theres some links in there that explain the tech behind them...

As has already been pointed out, a single hard disk maxes out at about 10Megs a second for a sustained transfer, so making the LAN faster than that is pretty much pointless.

If you have a look at Quake3, it has a hardcoded maximum client rate of 25Kbps, so a 10Mbps switch would be more than adequate. Ditto for most other games, upgrading from 100Mbps to 1Gbps won't affect the performance at all.

Gigabit is good as a backbone for connecting large numbers of PCs, or when you've got a server with a large enough disk array to support it. It's largely wasted on desktops. For example, our LAN at work has a 2Gbps backbone connecting two buildings - one with all the desktops, the other with the servers. We've got about 300 desktops, and it rarely runs at more than 8 Megabytes per second, so around 5% usage.

besides, most 10/100/1000 switches even at a large price, still generally only offer one or two gigabit ports..

i too must agree, unless there are hundreds of you, you needent use gigabit.. except from maybe the server to the switch possibly..
