I need a recent bank statement and as I shred mine shortly after checking I thought simple process to get a replacement. Then the fun begins. I log into my online account and yes there is the facility to order a bank statement all you have to do is but in the necessary dates. I just need one which covers the last two months so I filled in the required dates and pressed next, to be greeted with this error. "1600014 : Sorry, but we can't send you statement sheets for the dates you requested because your name wasn't on the account account during that time". Now I am making my request after going through various security checks but I thought OK just a glitch I'll phone instead. It seems it is very difficult to phone your actual branch and get a 0845 number to call. After going through the interminable press this number on your keypad say this ETC ETC. I eventually talked to someone who apologised and said yes they were having problems with the online service but that she could indeed send me a statement for the princely sum of £5.00. I asked her if she was having a laugh but seeming no,that is what it costs. So I declined her offer and will make do with a mini statement from an ATM.
They've already sent you a free one so they can charge what they want if you need another I guess. Can you not download and print your statements? I can do this with RBS, no idea about other banks though. RBS also give you free paper statements if you are paperless, handy when you need them.
I could with Clydesdale but not Lloyds I have just discovered that it is still a fiver to order it online, just had another go and this time it recognised my ownership and was just about to click on send when I spotted the charge.
Rant withdrawn as I have discovered that I can print out my current, not so much statement but what I can see on screen in my account at the present time.
Go into a branch and ask them to mail you one? That charge is ridiculous..then again Santander who I am with are a bunch of ****s anyways. They might be nice and give it you free of charge.
I used to be with them myself, in fact I dumped them after joining the marketplace here as they take 5 days to transfer a payment whereas Lloyds is a couple of hours.
Painfull. HSBC will print mine off in branch for free. Just wish their online system was more reliable.
Llyods TSB tried to charge me £7 for a replacement credit card statement but when I dug my heels in and refused to pay it they waived the fee "on this occasion". I also recall years ago with the Bank of Scotland that when I paid cash into my account from another branch that it would take three days to register in my account. I closed my account shorly after that.
Used to work in a bank and was made to charge people for even a print out copy!! Idea was it forces them on to online banking Hated it, used to do my best to do it without, half my regular customers were sweet old dears, doubt they even knew what a computer was. Although I do remember tons of people taking the pee, lost cards, copy statements etc etc Still hated charging but don't waste my time!!
I can remember that happening to me. But I have once or twice when the banks have made an error I have claimed and received phone, paper and postage costs, takes a bit of pushing but what's good for the goose etc.
Actually, it's pretty much instant for Santander now. All payment sending Banks from Jan 2012 had to be compliant with the Faster Payments scheme. Limits vary from Bank to Bank, but generally you can send up to 10K from a personal account, for it to reach someone within two hours. Usually though, the transfer time is around 1 minute to 20 minutes. Not sure where you got five days from though. Before Faster Payments, Santander was part of the BACS scheme. BACS payments only take three working days to transfer. Cheques on the other hand........shudders. I should know, I helped implement the Faster Payments scheme to Banks . Total Banking nerd.
I got charged £10 once for a statement Needed it to prove i had not been paid by work on that occasion it was paying out £10 or losing a months wages.
I rang Halifax for a full statement history, turned up about 6 weeks later and wouldn't fit through the letter box. It was bigger than the Yellow Pages! I shudder to think what they paid for the postage!
Back in my Uni days I remember that for a bankers cheque Halifax wouldn't charge, however the one time I asked LloydsTSB to do it they wanted £10! AT the time that was quite a bit of money. These days however I find that they are as money grubbing as each other.
I know I'll be on the wrong side of everyone else in this thread but, for example, don't people who repair PCs as a business charge for doing it? They charge to cover the time they take to do it in man hour costs, a percentage of what it costs to buy tools to do theIr job, maintain and upgrade the equipment they think they need to produce invoices or keep uptodate with technology or have a website to advertise their business, and business premises and business rates and taxes to pay. Etc. Finally maybe make a bit of profit ..... Or take garages ... Where's the difference with producing duplicate paper bank statements? They have overheads too, and a lot more than just the staff or their bonuses. Their IT systems costs to provide all these electronic systems are phenomenal. And in the main the huge profits they were making didn't come from retail high street banking - which is what this is. The 1st class stamp to post that statement accounts for 12% of that £5.00 alone .
I had to get statements for a mortgage application, just went into the branch lloyds and e guy printed them off for me (3months worth) stamped and signed every page. These got lost in the post went into a different branch to get another set, the cashier got really shirty printed them out but not even on proper paper and refused to stamp or sign them... Didn't effect my application but I think it goes to show its the quality of the staff that varies as much as anything else!
