Hi, I am looking to buy a pre-built pc for gaming and i've found this. I'm told that the PSU and mobo may be of poor quality, but that was by some stubborn idiots from a competing site, so i dont know what to think now. Here is the build anyway: AM3 Phenom X4 955 3.2 GHz 8 MB Cache, Manufacturer Supplied Cooler, 4GB Corsair Memory DDR3 1600 (2 x 2gb), 500GB SATA Hard Drive, AM3 Asus M4N78-SE - DDR2 1066x2 720d chipset, ATI 4870 512MB PCI Express DDR DVI, Elite 330 Black Midi Case Window RC-330K-KWPC-GP, Powercool 850W High Efficiency Black PSU, DVD+/- RW - 20X (pioneer 116DBK), Price is £615 delivered. Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated. Also the 850w PSU was recommended, but isn't it a bit OTT?
They may be stubborn, but they're not idiots - the PSU & MB suck. Who recommended the PSU? You won't need 850W for that system, more like 400-500W tops.
Bit confused by the description!! It says the ram is 4gb of Corsair DDr3 1600 but that Asus board is AM2+ which only supports DDR2 (as you have written after the mobo name, which also states AM3 which it isn't). Is this how they have advertised it as it is rather misleading.
The PSU could be downgraded to a coolermaster 500w PSU, if that is any better quality? And crapbag that is copied and pasted from the site. Does the mobo not support ddr2 and ddr3?
Site is www.cougar-extreme.co.uk. I researched some oppinions/feedback on them and seemed 99% good, but there is no alternative mobo for that build, so is it a no-go? Edit: If i were to go with a core 2 quad instead there is this mobo : QCE - P43Twins1600 X-fire - 2000FSB DDR3 DDR2 1333x4 P43 CHIPSET Any better?
No mate. According to several retailers its an AM2+ board which will accept an AM3 cpu, ie the 955 but it will only support DDR2 ram and only up to 1066mhz as well. They are misrepresenting that rig if they are selling it as having DDR3, you need an AM3 board for that.
I take it this is the system you were looking at? In which case, they clearly offer a selection of AM2+ boards but don't offer any choice of DDR2 (only several DDR3 configurations). Based on that evidence, I wouldn't buy from them. No idea, I don't know of any motherboard that goes by that name (I assume QCE stands for Quad Core Extreme, the rest is just a list of specs).
http://www.cougar-extreme.co.uk/computer_systems/600B_ATI_AMD_4870.html Thats the DDR2 equivalent i think, do you know if any of those are better?
I've been looking around for a while and i thought they were the best option . I just want to get the best build possible for around £600-£650. Any other sites that would be worth looking at? Thanks for your replies.
How much do you know about pc's. Is building one yourself not an option, you'll get the best out of your £'s that way. Theres loads of help on here, plenty of people to walk you through it if need be.
Is it just for gaming? If so, then take a look at something like this. It's under budget, but you can upgrade the graphics card or whatever to suit. Best of all, they're a company with a good reputation, are transparent in what they are selling you and have good customisation options.
I know fairly little lol but i guess that's a good option with a bit of research. If i do read a few guides etc. where would be a good place to buy the components? Yeah smc, i just want something that im not going to have to update again any time soon.
See this thread if you do decide to go that route (which I would generally advise for those that have the time and patience for it; detailed technical knowledge isn't required).
the one thing I wouldnt go cheap on is a PSU, get possibly the Be Quiet! 650(?)W.. or the OCZ modXstream 500w.. or as mentioned a coolermaster one.
Ok thanks for your quick responses . I'll do a bit of research into custom building and post back if i make a decision, cheers.
I will upgrade my monitor at a later date, got a mouse and keyboard. One last question, when buying the components individually, do they come with the required wires and fittings or do you need to buy them seperately?
