I thought it would be my duty to help those with a little trouble in deciding on a laptop, what Brand, Model, Price, Company of Purchase, i live in the UK and have only bought 2 laptops (Waiting for money to go and collect), so i have a small knowledge of what is about, so im asking other bit-techers to help with their experiences, so im going to start the ball rolling:

    Company: www.laptopsdirect.co.uk
    Brand: Toshiba
    Model: Satellite Pro L20
Price: £500 (was before Christmas 05)

I found laptopsdirect to be helpful and always pleasant when i had to make a call to them, dealt with my enquiry quickly and effortlessly. very quick deliery, now even quicker with next day delivery.

I thought the quality on my Toshiba to be very good, Very stable, ran well and fast for its 1.4ghz Celeron spec, and still does, easy to upgrade RAM, would recomend a Sat Pro to a student for college, Uni or Sixth form.

    OK, I'll go next :

    Laptop 1
    Company : Iridium
    Brand : Iridium
    Model : Starbook 515
    Price £470

I bought this computer from my old job, so the price is slightly discounted, but it was still too much to pay. The laptop had to be sent back within a few months, with a problem with the battery. Basically it didn't work unless it was plugged in, which defies the point of a laptop for me. After I got it back, It had an overheating problem, so I sent it back. From what it seemed like, they didn't even look at it, they just re-installed windows, for when I got it back, It had the same problem.

Fortunatly, I had just refitted a computer for a mate, and was given the old processor, so I swapped the 2.4 celeron, for a 1.6 pentium 4. This sorted the overheating problem out.

Other problems included the screen was terrible on quality, the fans sounded like a 747 taking off, the standby cap lasted a few weeks before being worn down to a pulp, and finally, it was very, very slow, even after a fresh install.

All in all, not worth the money, and if you asked me to buy one for £20, i'd only take it for the processor, ram and HDD to sell on fleabay.

    Laptop 2

    Company : http://www.dabs.com
    Brand : Toshiba
    Model : Satellite Pro A100
    Price : £379

Dabs....I love this site, nice cheap laptop. After the woes of the starbook, I decided to go for the cheapest I can find. It's a similar spec to sam's L20, with a 15.4 widescreen, and WiFi integrated.

I've only had this 3 months, but it exceeds it's predecessor in every way. It's reliable, feels very fast, and even more so when you consider the spec, plays some games (I play Guild Wars and Halo on it), and it also fits the job for work. Battery life isn't outstanding, but I only use it without being plugged in on the train to and from college / work, and occasionally at home, while i'm eating a meal before I go on my main rig.

For the price it still feels too good to be true, and I would recommend it to any students, and people who use a laptop at work. Also, interestingly enough, the HDD is SATA, which is always a nice touch...

For what it’s worth, I have found Toshiba laptops to be very good as of late. They are now my first recommendation for a new laptop.

    Laptop 1
    Company: Toshiba
    Brand: Toshiba
    Model: Satellite M45-S2652
    Price: $1,067

Best laptop I’ve ever had. The screen on this one is awesome. I even take this to LAN parties (4936 3Dmark 2001SE). Battery life is excellent (3.5 hours YMMV) Does not get hot or even warm on the underside. Quiet as humanly possible. Paper-thin, this is a Good Thing.

    Laptop 2
    Company: Dell
    Brand: Dell
    Model: Inspiron 1100
Price: I got mine for free

This one was given to me after on of my customers upgraded again. Quiet as can be (louder than the above). Is now my permanent folder. One niggle is lack of a mini-PCI slot for Wi-Fi. All in all a decent laptop. Stay away from games with this one (838 in 3Dmark 2001SE)

I have about 6 more but they are 3 years old (at least)

    OK, my second laptop

    Company: http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk/index.php
    Brand: Asus
    Model: A6Tc-AP007H
    Price: £618.00 (£726.15 Inc. VAT)

Asus laptops where very helpful when i contacted them regarding this asus lappy as it was out of stock, they told me when it would be back instock, only i had a dilemma, i didnt have the money for another 2 weeks :waah: This was not a problem, give them a £100 deposit and they would keep one for me for when i go up and collect it :D

I now own the laptop, and wow, its a brilliant laptop. Can play COD 2 if you wanted to, and would also play BF2 if you bothered to wait for it to install. Very quick to boot up, screen very clear, built in webcam very clear, speakers loud enough, DVD drive good, and battery life alot better than my last laptop (Toshiba), around 3 hours with the wifi on.

    Over all, extremly pleased :D
