my band's site was graciously hosted by the guy who owned the domain (www.eighty4.com) on his server. unfortunately, he's moved house and the server's gone.

he's given us the domain but said something about DNS - i did the site design but i've never set up any site other than very basic free ones in the past so i have no idea where to go from here

    we need hosting and stuff...?

Yep, youll need hosting and youll need to tell the company that you already have a domain you want hosting. They will give you a couple of name server adresses which you then point the domain at. I wouldn't know how to enter the name servers, I think it depends on how it was registered. E.g. With UKReg they just give you a control panel where you can change them anytime you like. :)

actually if you have a static ip and a computer that you can run 24/7 you can just throw apache web server on that box and point the domain to the servers ip address. That way you can avoid the hostng cost all together.

If you site is very multimedia intensive or you are on 56k don't go this way, but if its just pics and html you should be fine, unless you are used to getting thousands of hits a day.

Hosting isn't too expensive these days so if you don't know what you are doing or if money is not a problem then just look up web hosting services and pick the one that suits you.

    Doing a bit of digging:

Internic (http://www.internic.net) tells me that eighty4.com is registered by Network Solutions. Network Solutions (http://www.networksolutions.com) say it's registered by Lycos on behalf Andrew Kinning from Paisley.

The nameservers for the domain are:
    NSHOST1.ST2.LYCEU.NET 212.78.206.21
    NSHOST2.ST2.LYCEU.NET 212.78.206.22
    NSHOST3.ST2.LYCEU.NET 212.78.192.249

..which sound like they belong to Lycos' EU branch (lyceu).

So, firstly you need to organise hosting with someone, then get Andrew to talk to Lycos and ask them to alter the DNS records for www.eighty4.com so that they will point to the server address that the hosting company will have given you. Andrew will have to do it because he owns the domain, and Lycos won't (or at least, shouldn't) alter the records unless he asks them to.
    Make sense? :)

    Cheers
