Sensible cars tend to be boring. An 8.3 V-10 pickup that goes around 160 is a lot more fun than a 1.5 econobox. To each his own. If I spend 5 grand on fuel per year and you only spend 1 grand, that's my problem.

You need oxygen, food, and water. You don't need a house, electricity, a computer, the internet, a car, or even clothing.

    Not neccasarily.

I thought you only earned 4 grand...? ;)

Actually, it's everyone's problem. You are ruining the planet for everyone.

Why does every thread in here turn into the same argument :sigh:

    Different cultures,

America generally has longer, wider, straighter roads more suited to their type of car, where as Europe has shorter, narrower, twisty roads more suited to our type of cars.

And on the culture thing, look at our favored motorsports, we tend to preffer F1 compaired to the yanks with IRL
F1 is more concerned with handling and IRL top speed.

The IRL really isn't that big in America - popular, yea kind of, but not huge. What's really popular here is NASCAR that run Pontiac's, Ford's and Chevy's.

    My thoughts exactly

That was an example...is there some reason for all the hostility towards the Americans on this forum that aren't apologetic for the actions of thier Government?

Not really, more an inclination to taking a global view.

There's Holden and Ford in Australia...they've got large displacement V-8's.

GM and Ford are US though...you are right! We are trying to destroy the World!

Actually, I merely engaged BrianPodskalny in a conversation about the possibility of GM using GM Europe engines and whether there was a link between US emissions regs and the lower mileage achieved.

Were he Australian, I would have enquired about whether he finds things relevent in Australia.

    Get over your persecution complex.

Interesting tidbit: My dad has a 74 AMC Matador, I think its a 5.2L, with a 304. He had quite a few features that came from the factory (and now i cant remember them.. dammit.) which were supposed to impose the new emissions standards. He removed most of them for this reason and that, and then had our mechanic do the emissions inspection, and he passed ;p

its the same over here, pretty much every vauxhall made from 2000 onwards has had a terrible engine in them (GM make vauxhall's engines) and its mostly down to the emission conrtolls and sensors.

If I remember correctly, the US actually now has tighter emission regs for new cars than most of the rest of the world. Now, I may be wrong, but that's what I've read and heard.

    Slightly off-topic...

Are there quite a lot of accidents with young drivers in America? Over here I bet the amount of accidents with new drivers would rocket if they all have 2.0ltr+ cars. Its bad enough as it is with 1.1ltrs.

Now I've always agreed with what Dad has said, if our fuel was a cheap over here the vast majority would own larger engined cars. But saying that there is no way in hell I would trust a new driver would anything large, at least not till they have at least a full years driving experience.

It's hard to say yes or no to that because I don't know the ratio in other nations. I do know that there are more "kids" in accidents than adults here, but that can be attributed to lack of experience and/or more recless driving compared to older folk.

    nope

firs example off the top of my head

skoda fabia vRS,diesel so nice and reliable cheap to run but youc na drive ti like you sat on a wasp, i dont knwo anyone who think its boring but it is farly sensable

rover 600ti, 2ltr petrol engine so it will drink but agian if driven carefully is pretty good for mpg but floor it and by christ its fun

there just the first two that spring to mind

there is no persecution against americans here, the hostility is to the american, i dont care attitude, you even had it yourself whn you said you could ahve bought a diesel but you decided to go for a petrol that didnt offer much more improvement and then said, if you spend more on fuel, its your problem, is it any wonder people get wound up as the us use a hell of a lot more resorces than quite a lot of the world put togehter but comparing population numbers have very few people using htem when we only have a finate supply

no sorry, as penski said its everyones problem

i am quite surpised that brianpodskanlny's cavelier doing so little to the gallon when gm ahve access to some fantastic lower cc engines, it seems madness they dont use them, ah well im sure gm will start nicking parts from the euro bin when prices really start to shoot in america

It won't happen as most Euro cars will not pass American emissions testing. In fact, if I were to buy a Euro version of a car, I would have to have the engine shipped seperate from the rest of the car, have it put together in the US and register it as a kit car so that I can byass the emissions regulations. This is how Ferrari, Lamborghini and other exotics are imported and why company's such as Volvo have specific engines and exhaust controls for the US market.

The Radical comes to mind...1300 'Busa motor IIRC. I wouldn't exactly call that monster sensible ;) If a car has lots of power and is rear wheel drive it's good by me.

It is possible to get 26+ miles per US gallon in the GM LS1 5.7l V-8 Corvette/Camaro.

Most new drivers cant afford a 2ltr, lol, and if they can you could assume they might be able to handle it better. Like we mentioned, most kids drive little imports as their first car, we cant afford a classic or an SUV, especially with gas prices the way they are.
