They use it is toasters, hair dryers and such. You should be able to get one of those and scavenge the parts.

    Yeah... but as a spool...
If you buy some and they ask why, tell them you're making a heater.

best thing i have found is diodes, the ones that look really small and glass/plastic, with a red band at the one (+ve) end, these connceted to a circuit that can be set of via I.R. or radio etc, wrap the diode around the top of a match or ina pile of something that ignites easily like the tip of a fuse & then move away, set off and enjoy :) :cooldude: think i saw that in the anarchists cookbook, most the stuff in there is trash and Bulls*** but I tried this particular one, and it works find, just use a 9V as the supply

a purely chemical detonator can be made by mixing potassium permanganate and glycerin, both of which are available from a chemist. Without going into the chemistry involved, this is a redox reaction between a strong reducing agent and a strong oxidising agent, which results in oodles of heat. This causes the glycerin to ignite, with predictable results. You can vary how long it takes to ignite by playing with the exact amounts of each reagent - more glycerin will make it take a bit longer.

Since the reaction generates a lot of heat, it can be used as a starter reaction for something else, such as black powder or gunpowder, or even magnesium ribbon (although this takes some care).

Be warned, the gas liberated in the reaction is rather bad for you, and hot fragments may be spewed a fair way, so you really shouldn't be playing around with this. Anything you manage to blow off is your problem and responsibility.

Along similar lines of what was already said, I've taken a christmas tree light, filed off the tip so you still have a glass 'cup' and the filament. This takes a little practice, but isn't too hard. Then you can fill the glass cup up w/ gunpowder or whatever to give it a bit more of a ignition kick than just the filament by itself. Nice and compact. I used to just run a long line of speaker wire between the detonator and the electrical source (old car batteries work well).

How does one get a hold of thermite?

Or can one make it easily?

The simplest detonator i've done (back when i was 10-11 years old), was a single, very thin wire (out of a cord) wrapped around the head of a match. I used some batteries to set it off and it worked very nicely.

mix powdered iron oxide with powdered aluminum. I think you have to heat it up too - and I don't really remember the mixture. Then you light it with magnesium. But now we're just completely off topic.

There are many tutorials on the net, one of the most common is of course the Anarchist's cookbook. But basically, mix Iron Oxide with powdered aluminum in the correct ratio, and apply a huge amount of heat (2000 C IIRC).

edit: You beat me to it :)

We're drifting into realms where the Patriot Act could get your line tapped, stick to electrocution, leaves a much neater corpse than HE. ;)

    Question answered, mind the doors...
