I'm thinking of upgrading a couple of parts on my build. It's an i5-750 on an MSI-CD53 and 4GB of Corsair Dominator RAM (2x2 sticks). I've been thinking of putting another 2GB stick of RAM in, to boost me up to 6GB ... I'm on Windows 7 64-bit, and I figure the system will be able to make use of an extra boost of RAM. I've been shopping around, and I can't seem to find anyone who sells a single 2GB stick of RAM. Is there a reason for this? Is it not possible to have 3 sticks (does it have to be an even number?) And if it is ... where could I find them? And another question, is it ok to put extra RAM in from a different manufacturer, as long as it is the same speed and frequency? Thanks.
You want an even number of sticks so as to run in dual channel mode, but single sticks are available. It's fine.
As has been said, ideally you want RAM in pairs to take advantage of dual channel on an i5 system. Crucial let you buy single sticks, but they're around £60 for a ddr3 2gb stick.
So my ideal setup will basically be to purchase another two 1GB sticks of RAM and have them in my last two slots, making four sticks rather than having three? Good to know, was getting myself confused there. Thanks guys!
Basicaly if you run your memory ganged it'll have to run in pairs or three's in x58 if you want to run singles you will need to be unganged for each stick to work independently.
